A fixed blade knife has a rigid blade and is more robust – ideal for heavy tasks like batoning or carving. A folding knife folds shut, is more compact and better suited as an everyday knife or for light outdoor tasks.
For beginners we recommend the Gerber Strongarm or a Ruike P series folder. Both offer good quality at a fair price and are versatile.
Use a diamond sharpener such as the DMT models from our range. A compact pull-through sharpener works well in the field; a bench stone provides precision sharpening at home.
420HC (Gerber) offers good corrosion resistance and easy sharpening. Sandvik 14C28N (Ruike) is harder and holds its edge longer. High carbon steel (BeaverCraft) gives the sharpest edge but needs regular oiling.
