Worklights – compact, robust, hands-free

A worklight is not the same as a flashlight – even though both are LED lamps. The key difference lies in the light type and the holder: a flashlight delivers a focused spot beam into the distance and is held in the hand. A worklight delivers wide floodlight in the near field and can be attached hands-free – with magnet, clip or hook. This combination is exactly what makes the difference when you're working on a car in the workshop, inspecting a machine or carrying out a repair in the boiler room. In the Swiss-Sale.ch range you'll find compact worklights with a focus on Fenix – the WT series as worklight flashlights with dual light source, and the WF series as robust industrial lights, with selected models offering ATEX approval for hazardous zones.

What do you want to illuminate? Use cases overview

The choice of the right worklight depends on the environment you work in, which holder you need and how much brightness is required. The main use cases:

Workshop and DIY mechanics

For the home workshop, hobby carpentry or the workbench in the basement, a compact rechargeable worklight with COB module is the typical choice. The COB (Chip-on-Board) delivers wide, glare-free floodlight without harsh shadows – ideal when you're working on a piece and want to illuminate it evenly. The magnetic base holds the lamp to any metal surface, the clip to the tool belt. Luminous flux: 200–500 lumens is perfectly sufficient for the near field – more tends to dazzle rather than help.

Automotive and motorcycle service – magnet on the bodywork

For everyone who works on their own car, the magnetic base is the decisive feature. The lamp hangs on the raised hood edge, on the bodywork or on the fender and illuminates the engine compartment hands-free – while both hands are on the wrench. Rotatable magnetic bases (often 180° swivel) allow precise alignment. For this use case, the Fenix WT series is the obvious choice – worklight flashlight with LED spot at the front plus COB floodlight on the side, in a compact stick form.

Inspection and service work

For service technicians, HVAC fitters, electricians and everyone working in narrow switch and technical rooms, compactness and targeted light guidance matter most. Here the slim worklight flashlights of the WT series are ideal – they fit in the chest pocket, illuminate cavities and switch cabinets and provide enough light in tight spaces. The pocket clip is more important than the magnet here, since not every inspection takes place on steel surfaces.

ATEX and hazardous zones – industry and chemicals

In hazardous zones with flammable gases, vapours or dust, only explosion-protected worklights may be used – classic industrial and chemical sector, petrochemicals, tank farms and Ex zone areas. The Fenix WF series offers selected models with ATEX approval (Zone 0, 1 or 2 depending on the model). These lamps are specifically certified and more expensive than standard worklights – but legally required for the respective area of use.

Emergency, DIY and camping

For occasional bicycle repairs, a weekend job or as a backup for a power outage, a compact worklight with rechargeable battery is enough. The combined LED-and-COB setup covers 90 % of DIY situations – from hanging with a swivel hook in the garage to a sleeve magnet when looking for a fuse in the electrical box. The lower end of the range is sufficient here.

Fenix – the main brand in the range

The focus of the worklight range at Swiss-Sale.ch is Fenix – the brand has been established in the outdoor and flashlight market for years and brings two specialised worklight lines with the WT and WF series. Additional brands are continuously being evaluated.

Fenix WT series – worklight flashlights

The WT series are compact LED worklight flashlights with dual light source: at the front a classic LED spot for distance, on the side a COB module for wide floodlight. With magnetic base at the tail, pocket clip on the body and USB-C direct charging. Typical use case: workshop, automotive service, inspection, DIY. Current models in the series: WT16R and WT25R – see product details in the range.

Fenix WF series – robust industrial worklights

The WF series is the more robust industrial line from Fenix – reinforced housings, higher IP protection classes and ATEX certification for selected models in hazardous zones. Use case: industry, petrochemicals, service in explosion-risk areas, tank farms, mining. Models in the series: WF05E, WF11E, WF25RM, WF26R, WF30RE – details and certification scope vary by model.

Magnet, clip or hook – the mounting options

The mounting is the defining feature of a worklight. Three concepts dominate the range:

  • Magnetic base – usually at the tail or on the side, often 180° swivel. Adheres to steel: bodywork, workbench, radiator, beam, machines. Important: only on magnetic materials – aluminium, certain stainless steel grades without ferromagnetic components and plastic are excluded.
  • Pocket clip – usually mounted close to the lamp body. Clamps in the chest pocket, tool belt loop or hem of the trousers. For service technicians and inspection, the most important mounting feature.
  • Hanging eye or swivel hook – at the tail or on the side. Allows hanging under workbench, on a hook in the engine compartment or from the ceiling. On some models combined with the magnet (two attachments in one lamp end).

Most compact worklight flashlights combine all three mounting options in one housing. This is the central added value over a normal flashlight.

Lumens, light type and COB – what to look for?

For worklights: more lumens is not automatically better. In the near field (30 cm to 2 m, where worklights are used), excessive lumen values dazzle more than they help. Realistic reference values:

Lumen rangeUse caseLight type
50–200 lmInspection, switch cabinet, meter readingCOB floodlight usually sufficient
200–500 lmWorkshop, automotive service, DIY mechanicsCOB + additional LED spot
500–1'000 lmLarge workshops, garages, hallsStrong LED spot, COB optional
Over 1'000 lmIndustry, outdoor service in darknessHigh-power LED, often industrial WF line

On light type: COB (Chip-on-Board) is a flat LED module that generates wide, glare-free floodlight – perfect for near-field illumination. A classic LED with reflector generates a focused beam – ideal for distance, rather unsuitable in the workshop. Most worklight flashlights combine both: COB on the side for floodlight, LED at the front for spot – switchable depending on the task.

Rechargeable or battery – the power supply

Modern worklights almost exclusively rely on built-in lithium-ion batteries with USB-C direct charging. Advantages: no battery changes, no charging dock, simply charge via computer, phone charger or power bank. Burn time: typically 4–10 hours at medium level, 1–2 hours at maximum power. For 24/7 industrial use, there are occasional models with replaceable 18650 batteries – the rarer variant, but useful for intensive use. For emergency and backup lamps, battery-powered models (AA, AAA) still make sense – because they still work even after 5 years unused in the toolbox.

Safety and ATEX for worklights

For industrial use in hazardous zones with flammable gases, vapours or dust, explosion-protected lamps are mandatory – standard LED lamps may not be used there because they can be ignition sources. The ATEX directive of the EU divides hazardous zones into three zones:

  • Zone 0 – explosive atmosphere permanently or predominantly (e.g. inside a tank). Lamps with Zone 0 approval are the most demanding category.
  • Zone 1 – occasional occurrence in normal operation (e.g. tank farms, pump systems).
  • Zone 2 – only rarely or briefly (e.g. storage rooms with chemicals).

The Fenix WF series covers selected zones – before purchasing, always check the certificates of the specific model. For pure workshop and service applications without hazardous gas reference, ATEX is not required, a standard worklight flashlight from the WT series is fully sufficient.

Care and storage

LED worklights are largely maintenance-free – with good care they last tens of thousands of burn hours. Important: with rechargeable lamps, don't store the battery fully empty and don't keep it fully charged for years – ideal charge state for longer storage breaks is 40–60 %. For models with magnetic base, occasionally clean the magnet – metal shavings and dirt like to accumulate there. Clean the housing with mild soapy water, no solvents – these can attack the O-ring seals.

Recommendation overview – which worklight suits you?

Our recommendation: For most users, a rechargeable worklight flashlight from the Fenix WT series with magnet, clip and combined LED-COB light module covers around 80 % of all applications. For industry with hazardous zones, the surcharge for ATEX models from the WF series is worth it.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about worklights

What's the difference between a worklight and a flashlight?

The difference lies in two aspects: light type and holder. A flashlight delivers a focused spot beam for distance and is held in the hand – it's optimised for illuminating distant areas in outdoor or EDC use. A worklight delivers wide floodlight in the near field (often via a COB module) and can be fixed hands-free – with magnet, pocket clip or hook. This combination of floodlight plus holder is exactly what makes the difference when you're working on a piece, wrenching in the engine compartment or inspecting a machine.

What does COB mean on a worklight?

COB stands for Chip-on-Board. It's a flat LED module in which several LED chips are mounted directly on a circuit board – without individual reflectors. The result is wide, glare-free floodlight without harsh shadows and without a hotspot. Exactly what you need in the workshop when you want to illuminate a piece evenly. Most worklight flashlights combine COB (on the side of the housing, for floodlight) with a classic reflector LED (at the front, for spot in the distance) – switchable depending on the task.

How many lumens should a worklight have?

For most workshop and service applications, 200 to 500 lumens are perfectly sufficient. In the near field, more light tends to dazzle rather than help. For inspection work in switch cabinets and electrical boxes, even 50 to 200 lumens are enough. If you're illuminating large halls or outdoor service in darkness, 500 to 1'000 lumens or more come into play – but that's special use, not the normal case. More important than high lumen values is the right light type: COB floodlight for near field, LED spot for distance.

What does ATEX mean for worklights?

ATEX is an EU directive for equipment in explosion-risk areas – hazardous zones with flammable gases, vapours or dust. In such zones, only specifically certified lamps may be used, because they must not create ignition sources. The zones are: Zone 0 (permanent explosive atmosphere, e.g. inside a tank), Zone 1 (occasional occurrence, e.g. tank farms) and Zone 2 (rare/brief). The Fenix WF series offers selected models with ATEX approval – always check the certificates of the specific model before purchasing. For pure workshop and DIY applications without hazardous gas reference, ATEX is not required.

Which worklight is ideal for working on a car?

For automotive service, a compact worklight flashlight with rotatable magnetic base is the typical choice. You can fix the lamp on the raised hood, on the bodywork or on the fender and align the light cone precisely – while both hands are on the wrench. Important: the COB floodlight module – it illuminates the engine compartment widely, without harsh shadows and without dazzling you with mirror reflections. The Fenix WT series is designed exactly for this use.

Are worklights waterproof?

Most compact worklight flashlights achieve IP65 or IP66 – meaning dust-tight and protected against water jets. For workshop use, automotive service and occasional rain, that's perfectly sufficient. The industrial models of the Fenix WF series often reach IP68 (permanent submersion) – relevant for tunnel work, tank cleaning or outdoor service in continuous rain. The exact IP class depends on the model and is stated on the respective product detail page.

How do I charge a rechargeable worklight?

Modern worklight flashlights have a built-in battery with USB-C direct charging. You plug the USB-C cable into the lamp port and charge via a computer, phone charger, car USB or power bank. Full charge typically takes 2–4 hours depending on battery capacity. A status LED shows the charging process. Advantage over old rechargeable models: no charging dock required, no manufacturer-specific connectors, simply standard USB-C. For emergency use, models with replaceable 18650 batteries are a sensible alternative – you can insert a spare battery instead of charging.

What kind of magnet is good for a worklight?

The magnetic base should be strong enough to hold the lamp securely even on slightly tilted or vertical steel surfaces – even if you wiggle it. Practice test: hang on the underside of a workbench or hood edge, cause light vibrations – the lamp must not slip off. Very useful are rotatable magnetic bases (often 180° swivel), because they allow alignment of the light cone while the magnet stays fixed. Important to know: the magnet only adheres to ferromagnetic materials – aluminium, many stainless steel grades and all plastics are excluded.

What's the difference between WT and WF at Fenix?

The WT series is the compact worklight flashlight line from Fenix – with dual light source (LED spot + COB floodlight), magnetic base, pocket clip and USB-C direct charging. Use case: workshop, automotive service, inspection, DIY. The WF series is the more robust industrial line – reinforced housings, higher IP protection classes and ATEX certification for selected models in hazardous zones. Use case: industry, petrochemicals, service in explosion-risk areas. For 90 % of users, the WT series is sufficient; the WF series is for specific industrial environments.

Can I use a worklight as a flashlight?

Yes, especially the WT worklight flashlights have a full LED spot at the front that works like a normal flashlight – with distance range and beam throw. The COB side light is additional, not replacing. The other way round works less well: a classic flashlight without COB module and without magnet only fulfils worklight requirements to a limited extent. Those who want both functions in one lamp are well served with a worklight flashlight – a clear advantage over a setup with two separate lamps.

How long does the battery of a worklight last?

Burn time strongly depends on the lighting mode. Typical values for a compact worklight flashlight: at maximum brightness (e.g. 500 lm spot) 1 to 2 hours, at medium level (e.g. 150 lm COB) 4 to 8 hours, at low level (e.g. 30 lm) up to 20 hours and more. For typical workshop sessions (one repair, a few hours), a full charge is easily sufficient. For intensive 24/7 industrial use, a model with replaceable 18650 battery is worth it, so you can insert a spare battery.

Are worklights freely available for purchase in Switzerland?

Yes, worklights are not subject to any special distribution or carrying restrictions in Switzerland – they are freely available and may be carried without special regulation. Unlike knives (Weapons Act) or laser pointers (radiation protection), there is no blade length or output power limit. Only restriction: For industrial use in certified hazardous zones, ATEX-approved lamps are mandatory – but that's an occupational safety, not a weapons law requirement.
