Hultafors unites two Swedish heritage brands: Hults Bruk, the world’s oldest axe forge founded in 1697, and Hultafors Tools, the measuring and hand-tool specialist established in 1883. In the Hult Valley of Östergötland – where stone axes were crafted some 5,000 years ago – skilled blacksmiths still forge every axe head individually by hand. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find a curated selection of hand-forged Hultafors axes, hatchets and outdoor knives for bushcraft, hunting and forestry.

Hults Bruk – the World’s Oldest Axe Forge

On 4 May 1697, Jakob Renstierna received permission to establish a drop forge below Lake Ägelsjön. What began as a nail and chain smithy evolved over centuries into the oldest continuously operating axe forge in the world. In the 1870s Gunnar Ekelund returned from America with new forging techniques and axe patterns – including the renowned Montreal and Yankee designs. The Agdor brand gained worldwide fame: woodsmen would pay up to a month’s wages for a single Agdor axe. Today more than 20 blacksmiths at the original site forge over 100,000 axe heads per year.

Hults Bruk Axeblade Steel – CO2-Neutral and Recycled

Every Hultafors axe head is forged from Hults Bruk Swedish Axeblade Steel – a specialty steel produced CO2-neutrally from recycled material. The blank is heated to approximately 1,200 °C in an induction oven and shaped in 50 to 60 blows on forging machines dating from the 1950s and 1960s. A hardness of 55 HRC ensures an edge that withstands even the hardest wood. American hickory serves as the handle, secured with wooden wedges and a steel plug. The result: a tool built to last generations.

Premium Axes – Named After Blacksmiths and Places

The Hultafors premium collection bears the names of celebrated blacksmiths and places around the Hults Bruk valley. The Hultan (0.5 kg) is a compact hatchet for hiking and bushcraft. The Ekelund (0.85 kg) serves as a versatile hunting and all-round axe. The Stålberg (0.8 kg) is the carpenter’s and joiner’s tool of choice. And the Kvillinge (1.9 kg) delivers the force for heavy splitting. All premium axe heads undergo a three-step sharpening process to razor-sharp perfection and carry a lifetime warranty on the head.

Outdoor Knives – Japanese Carbon Steel for Tough Jobs

Beyond axes, Hultafors offers rugged outdoor knives designed for bushcraft and survival. The OK1 is a heavy-duty work knife with a 3.0 mm Japanese carbon-steel blade, 58–60 HRC and an 82 mm tang that withstands batoning. The Scandi grind provides precise carving, while the EPD rust-protection coating and a ground spine for fire-steel striking complete the bushcraft package. The OK4 adds a Santoprene friction grip with an integrated fire-starter pocket.
