22 mm Objective

Binoculars with 22 mm Objective
Mini-Pocket for the Go

A 22 mm binocular belongs to the mini-pocket class: ultra-light, pocket-friendly, with slightly more light gathering than 21 mm. Ideal for travel, city and outdoor day tours.

What does 22 mm objective mean?
  • Mini-pocket class: usually below 280 g
  • Exit pupil at 8x22 = 2.75 mm
  • Slightly more light than 21 mm at almost the same weight
  • Typical configurations: 8x22, 10x22
  • Classic ultra-light travel binocular

What does 22 mm mean for light gathering?

The objective diameter determines light gathering. With an 8x22 binocular, the exit pupil is 2.75 mm; with 10x22 only 2.2 mm. This is sufficient by day but limited at dusk. For more light gathering in pocket format, the 25 mm binocular is the next step; for absolute minimum weight, the 21 mm binocular.

8x22 or 10x22 – which configuration?

On a 22 mm binocular, two magnifications are classically common:

  • 8x22 – balanced pocket binocular with 2.75 mm exit pupil. More on 8x magnification.
  • 10x22 – more reach, but exit pupil reduced to 2.2 mm. More on 10x magnification.

22 mm binocular: What to look for when buying?

On a 22 mm binocular, the weight-to-image-quality ratio counts. Look for full rubber armouring, robust centre focusing and multi-coated optics (FMC). Twist-up eyecups help eyeglass wearers. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.

Frequently asked questions – 22 mm binoculars

22 mm or 25 mm binocular – which is better?

22 mm is lighter and smaller, 25 mm offers slightly more light gathering (exit pupil 3.13 mm at 8x25 vs. 2.75 mm at 8x22). For pure pocket format, 22 mm is enough; for more flexible use the 25 mm.

How bright is a 22 mm binocular at dusk?

Limited. Sufficient by day, dark in the evening. For dusk, 32 mm and 42 mm binoculars are clearly better suited.

Which magnification suits a 22 mm objective?

Standard is 8x22 with 2.75 mm exit pupil – balanced for daytime use. 10x22 is recommended only for steady hands and good lighting.

Is a 22 mm binocular suitable for birdwatching?

For occasional observation in the garden or while travelling, yes. For serious birdwatching, a 32 mm or 42 mm with better detail resolution is recommended.
