A pair of binoculars (also called field glasses) is one of the most versatile optical instruments available. It magnifies distant objects and reveals details invisible to the naked eye. The combination of magnification and objective diameter – for example 10×42 – determines the key characteristics: how close and how bright the image appears.
Modern binoculars use premium glass types such as ED glass (Extra-low Dispersion) to minimise colour fringing and multi-coatings (Fully Multi-Coated) for maximum light transmission. Roof prisms enable slim, compact designs, while Porro prisms deliver a particularly vivid, three-dimensional image. Many models are nitrogen-filled, making them waterproof and fogproof – essential for outdoor use in any weather.
The first number indicates the magnification – 10× means an object appears ten times closer. The second number is the objective diameter in millimetres – 42 mm describes the size of the front lens. A larger objective diameter gathers more light and delivers a brighter image, which is especially advantageous at twilight.
The exit pupil (objective diameter divided by magnification) determines how bright the image appears. A 10×42 binocular has an exit pupil of 4.2 mm, an 8×42 has one of 5.25 mm. For twilight observation and hunting, an exit pupil of at least 4 mm is recommended, ideally 5 mm or more.
Roof-prism binoculars are slim, compact and sit well in the hand. Porro-prism binoculars have the classic offset shape and often deliver a somewhat more vivid, three-dimensional image at the same quality level. For mobile use, roof-prism models are more practical; for stationary observation, Porro models can offer optical advantages.
Premium binoculars are filled with nitrogen or argon, preventing internal lens fogging. They are also waterproof (often IPX7) and suitable for any weather. For regular outdoor use, this feature is highly recommended.
Binoculars are universally useful: birdwatchers appreciate bright 8×42 or 10×42 models with wide fields of view. Hunters prefer rugged, twilight-capable optics. Hikers opt for compact, lightweight models (8×25 or 10×25) that fit in any jacket pocket. For sports events and concerts, handy compact binoculars work well, and astronomy enthusiasts reach for high-aperture models with 70–80 mm objectives.

For beginners, 8× or 10× magnification is recommended. 8× offers a wider field of view and a steadier image, 10× brings more distant objects closer. Magnifications above 12× require steady hands or a tripod and are better suited for experienced users.
ED stands for Extra-low Dispersion. This special glass minimises chromatic aberration – colour fringing at high-contrast edges. The result is a sharper, colour-neutral image. Binoculars with ED glass are particularly suited for birdwatching and hunting where detail accuracy is crucial.
For regular outdoor use, waterproof binoculars are recommended. Nitrogen- or argon-filled models also prevent internal lens fogging during temperature changes. For occasional use in good weather, a splash-resistant model may suffice.

Look for a sufficiently long eye relief of at least 15 mm. Binoculars with twist-up or fold-down eyecups can be optimally adjusted for spectacle wearers. Most premium models in our range meet this requirement.
