What distinguishes outdoor from EDC and camping?

An outdoor flashlight sits between the compact EDC light and the stationary camping lantern. It is larger and more powerful than an EDC light (more range, longer runtime, more robust build), but more compact and mobile than a camping lantern. It is optimised for active movement in terrain – not for camp or tent lighting. For stationary camp light, a headlamp or camping lantern is better.

Which outdoor activities have special requirements?

What to look for when buying?

Most important: the battery system. For short tours, integrated batteries with USB-C charging are sufficient. For multi-day tours without power access, 18650/21700 replaceable batteries are clearly superior – reserve cells are compact and light. Pay attention to compatibility with standard batteries and avoid proprietary systems. Check cold performance if winter use is planned. A light with memory function starts at the last mode – practical at night, when you don't want to be blinded from 0 to maximum.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor flashlights

Outdoor flashlight or headlamp?

For most outdoor applications a headlamp is better (free hands, light beam follows the gaze). An outdoor flashlight complements it as backup or for situations with greater range. Many outdoor fans carry both.

How many lumens do I need when hiking?

500-1000 lumens maximum is sufficient. In daily use, mostly the medium setting (100-300 lumens) is used – peak output is reserve for path finding, distant observation or emergency.

Are replaceable or integrated batteries better?

For day trips and city use, integrated+USB-C is more practical. For multi-day tours or trips abroad, replaceable batteries (18650/21700) are superior – reserve batteries solve the power problem.

Do batteries work in the cold?

Lithium-ion batteries lose significant capacity in the cold. For winter use carry the light close to the body (inner pocket). Lights with thermal management can partially compensate cold losses.
