From CHF 46 to CHF 434 – for every budget and purpose
Whether splitting kindling, processing branches or preparing firewood – a good axe or reliable hatchet is essential gear for any outdoor enthusiast. Unlike a knife, axes and hatchets deliver the striking power needed for heavier woodwork.
Our range includes 15 models from four renowned manufacturers: Gerber delivers proven outdoor hatchets with a lifetime warranty, BeaverCraft offers hand-forged tools for carvers and bushcrafters, Morakniv stands for Swedish precision, and Camillus brings versatile tomahawks.
A hatchet has a short handle of approx. 25–35 cm and is used one-handed. Ideal for splitting kindling, carving tent pegs and light camp woodwork. Gerber and BeaverCraft offer the widest selection.
An axe has a longer handle (from 45 cm) and is used two-handed. It is suited for larger splitting tasks and extended woodworking sessions. The Morakniv Outdoor Axe is a classic example.
Tomahawks are light, versatile tools with a slim head. Originally designed as weapons, today they serve as camp hatchets, breaching tools or tactical implements. The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk is forged from a single piece of steel.
BeaverCraft offers specialised hatchets for woodworking: carving hatchets with flat grinds for controlled material removal and adzes for hollowing spoons and bowls.
Axes and hatchets accompany you when camping, bushcrafting, hiking and gardening. A compact hatchet fits in any backpack and often weighs under 600 g. For base camps, a full-size axe with a longer handle is recommended – it saves effort and delivers more striking energy.

A hatchet has a short handle (approx. 25–35 cm) and is used one-handed. An axe has a longer handle (from 45 cm) for two-handed work and delivers more striking power for splitting larger pieces of wood.
Carbon steel (as used by BeaverCraft) is harder, easier to sharpen and holds an edge longer. Stainless steel (as used by Gerber) resists rust and requires less maintenance. For bushcraft we recommend carbon steel, for camping stainless steel.
Use a file or sharpening stone (diamond sharpener recommended) and work at an angle of approx. 25–30 degrees along the edge. Some models can also be resharpened with the DMT Diafold.
For bushcraft we recommend the BeaverCraft AX1 (hand-forged, traditional) or the Gerber Bushcraft Hatchet (robust, with sheath). Both are compact enough for the backpack and versatile.
A tomahawk is a lightweight hatchet with a slim head. It is suited for splitting kindling, as a breaching tool and for tactical use. The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk is forged from a single piece of steel and extremely durable.
