BCB Sleep-Lite folding sleeping mat
Closed-cell foam with nothing that can fail

An inflatable mat is comfortable until it has a hole – and that reliably happens on the night it matters. The Sleep-Lite does not know that problem: closed-cell foam that needs neither a valve nor a repair kit, folded rather than rolled, 180 × 52 cm in size and 410 g light.

Buy the BCB Sleep-Lite folding sleeping mat – 410 grams that cannot fail

The BCB Sleep-Lite is a folding sleeping mat made of closed-cell foam for bivouac, camping and field use. Unfolded it measures 180 × 52 cm at 0.9 cm thick, weighs 410 g and folds down to a packed size of 52 × 22 × 8 cm. It was developed for military use and meets the British military standard UK/SC/3767 in issue 6; it is officially listed under NATO stock number 7210-99-328-5071. The finish is olive, the material waterproof and easy to clean.

Why foam instead of air

The mat with no failure mode

Inflatable mats insulate better at a smaller packed size – as long as they hold air. That is precisely their problem: a thorn, a spark from the fire or a chafing seam is enough, and the insulation becomes a groundsheet. Closed-cell foam has no such state. Every cell is sealed individually, there is no valve, no seam and no air chamber that could fail – a hole makes at most a hole, not an unusable mat. The same structure means it does not soak up water: you can put it on wet ground, wipe it down in the evening and pack it in the morning without it getting heavier. And because it folds rather than rolls, it lies flat against the pack instead of hanging outside as a roll.

0.9 centimetres – what that thickness delivers and what it does not

At 0.9 cm the Sleep-Lite is a thin mat, and that is a deliberate decision: it is built as a light, robust base layer, not as a comfort mattress. On forest floor, grass or sand it sleeps well; on gravel and rock you feel the ground. Anyone wanting a softer bed combines it with an inflatable mat on top – a common practice, because the foam then takes care of insulation downwards and the air mat of comfort, and a hole in the upper mat no longer ruins the night. That is exactly what 410 g and a flat packed size are made for.

On the R-value: no figure stated, so no figure given

The most common question about sleeping mats is the R-value – the number that says how well a mat keeps the cold of the ground away. BCB states no R-value for the Sleep-Lite, and we do not invent one. What can be said: closed-cell foam insulates reliably against ground cold because the trapped air cannot circulate, and it does so regardless of how heavily you lie on it. The thickness of 0.9 cm does set a limit to that insulation, though: the mat is intended for three seasons, and on its own it is not enough for winter bivouacs on snow. As soon as BCB supplies an R-value, we will add it here and to the specification table.

Military standard – what lies behind UK/SC/3767 and the NSN

The Sleep-Lite was developed for military procurement and meets the British specification UK/SC/3767 in issue 6. Under NATO stock number 7210-99-328-5071 it is listed in the NATO codification system. Neither is a marketing badge; both are procurement records: an NSN is only assigned to items that have actually entered a supply chain, and a specification of this kind describes requirements for material, dimensions and durability that an item has to meet. For you that means one thing above all: this mat is designed for sustained use and long storage, not for a single season.

Care and storage

The care effort is minimal, and that is part of the concept. Because the foam does not absorb water, a damp cloth is enough; for heavier soiling, water with a little soap, then air dry. Store the mat flat or loosely folded and not permanently under pressure – closed-cell foam is compression resistant, but years under a heavy crate will damage any material. Keep it away from open fire and flying sparks: foam melts, and a hole does not grow back. Prolonged direct sunlight makes the material more brittle, so in summer it is better off in the shade or in the pack than spending days on a car roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – BCB Sleep-Lite

Here you will find answers about the BCB Sleep-Lite – from material and dimensions through insulation, comfort and care to shipping within Switzerland.

What is the R-value of the BCB Sleep-Lite?
BCB states no R-value for the Sleep-Lite, so we give no figure either. Closed-cell foam insulates reliably against ground cold, but the thickness of 0.9 cm sets a limit: the mat is intended for three seasons, not for winter bivouacs on snow. As soon as a figure is available, we will add it.
How big and how heavy is the BCB Sleep-Lite?
Unfolded it measures 180 × 52 cm at 0.9 cm thick and weighs 410 g. Folded that gives a packed size of 52 × 22 × 8 cm, flat enough to go inside most backpacks instead of hanging outside as a roll.
Why foam rather than an inflatable mat?
Because the Sleep-Lite has no failure mode. There is no valve, no seam and no air chamber that can leak – a thorn or a spark makes at most a hole, not an unusable mat. In return, at 0.9 cm it is thinner and less comfortable than an air mat.
Is the BCB Sleep-Lite comfortable enough to sleep on?
On forest floor, grass or sand it sleeps well; on gravel and rock you feel the ground. It is built as a light, robust base layer rather than a comfort mattress. Anyone wanting a softer bed combines it with an inflatable mat on top – the foam then handles the insulation downwards.
Does the BCB Sleep-Lite absorb water on wet ground?
No. Closed-cell foam has individually sealed cells and therefore does not soak through. You can lay the mat on wet ground, wipe it down in the evening and pack it in the morning without it getting heavier or staying damp underneath.
What else can I use the BCB Sleep-Lite for besides sleeping?
Folded it works as a seat mat, as a base for a kit check, or stood up as a backrest. It also serves as an extra insulating layer under a thin air mat, or as an emergency base layer in a vehicle.
What do UK/SC/3767 and the NATO number mean on the Sleep-Lite?
UK/SC/3767 in issue 6 is a British procurement specification setting requirements for material, dimensions and durability. NATO stock number 7210-99-328-5071 means the item is listed in the NATO codification system. Both are procurement records, not advertising badges.
How do I clean and store the BCB Sleep-Lite?
Wiping it down damp is enough; for heavier soiling use water with a little soap, then air dry. Store it flat or loosely folded and not permanently under a heavy load. Keep it away from open fire and sparks, because foam melts, and avoid long spells of direct sunlight.
Is the BCB Sleep-Lite suitable for winter too?
Not on its own for bivouacs on snow. At 0.9 cm thick it is designed for three seasons. In winter it makes sense as the lower of two layers: foam underneath against the cold of the ground, a thicker or inflatable mat on top.
How quickly does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the BCB Sleep-Lite?
Orders placed before 17:00 are usually dispatched the same working day. We ship with Swiss Post, and delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 working days. From CHF 100 order value we deliver free of shipping costs.
Why buy the BCB Sleep-Lite from Swiss-Sale.ch?
We ship from our own stock in Switzerland – no customs, no waiting. Any warranty matter is handled by us inside the country. And if you are unsure whether the Sleep-Lite is enough on its own or you need a second layer, we advise you personally.
What should I bear in mind when using the BCB Sleep-Lite?
Keep your distance from campfires, stoves and flying sparks – foam melts and the hole stays. Lay the mat on a spot cleared of sharp stones and branches; that improves comfort far more than any extra thickness. And plan for a second insulating layer in winter.
