Your kuksa – a drinking vessel with soul

The kuksa is a traditional Scandinavian drinking cup that has been carved from birch wood by the Sami people in Lapland for centuries. With the BeaverCraft DIY07 Kuksa Carving Kit, you carve your own kuksa from scratch – from a solid walnut wood blank that already provides the basic cup shape. The kit includes everything you need: a BeaverCraft SK1 hook knife for hollowing out the bowl, a C1 whittling knife for the outer form, sandpaper for a smooth finish and illustrated step-by-step instructions. The kuksa is an advanced carving project that requires more skill than simple figure carving – but in return you get a functional drinking vessel that accompanies you on every outdoor adventure.

Walnut wood – premium grain for your kuksa

While traditional kuksas are carved from birch, BeaverCraft chose premium walnut wood for the DIY07. Walnut is a hard, fine-grained hardwood with a striking dark grain pattern – tougher than birch, naturally moisture-resistant and developing a unique patina over time. The pre-shaped blank already provides the cup form, so you can focus on hollowing and refining. The SK1 hook knife is specifically designed for concave cuts: its curved blade glides through the walnut wood, shaping the inside of the bowl evenly. Combined with the C1 whittling knife for the outer contour, you get the perfect tool duo for your kuksa project.

SK1 Hook knife – your tool for the bowl

The BeaverCraft SK1 hook knife is the centrepiece of any kuksa project. The curved blade is designed specifically for concave cuts and allows you to hollow out the inside of the drinking cup evenly and with control. The blade is made from high-quality carbon steel and holds its edge through extended carving sessions. Combined with the right technique – small, controlled strokes from rim to centre – you achieve an even bowl that will later hold your favourite drink.

Food-safe – the right finish for your kuksa

To ensure your kuksa not only looks great but is also safe for drinking, the right finish is crucial. After carving and sanding, we recommend treating with food-safe oil – such as linseed oil, walnut oil or dedicated wood oil for tableware. Never use varnish or synthetic resin! The oil penetrates the wood fibres, protects against moisture and gives the walnut wood a warm, silky sheen. Several thin coats with drying time between them produce the best result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – BeaverCraft DIY07

Find answers about the BeaverCraft DIY07 Kuksa Carving Kit – from walnut wood and hook knife to food safety and Swiss shipping.

What is a kuksa?

A kuksa is a traditional Scandinavian drinking cup handcrafted by the Sami people of Lapland for centuries. The BeaverCraft DIY07 uses premium walnut wood and includes everything you need to carve your own kuksa from scratch.

What is included in the BeaverCraft DIY07 carving kit?

The BeaverCraft DIY07 includes a pre-shaped walnut wood blank in kuksa form, a BeaverCraft SK1 hook knife, a C1 whittling knife, sandpaper and illustrated step-by-step instructions.

Who is the BeaverCraft DIY07 for?

The BeaverCraft DIY07 is an advanced carving kit aimed at carvers with some experience who want to create a functional drinking vessel in the Scandinavian tradition. Beginners should start with a simpler figure carving kit first.

Is the finished kuksa food-safe?

Yes, provided you apply a food-safe finish. We recommend linseed oil, walnut oil or dedicated wood oil for tableware. Never use varnish or synthetic resin! The oil penetrates the wood fibres and protects the walnut wood.

What is the SK1 hook knife used for?

The BeaverCraft SK1 hook knife is designed specifically for concave cuts. You use it to hollow out the inside of the kuksa – the drinking bowl – evenly. The curved blade glides through the wood with control.

Do I need to take special safety precautions when carving?

Yes. Always carve away from your body, hold the knife with a firm grip and work in a stable seated position. Sharp knives are safer than dull ones because less force is required. A cut-resistant glove provides additional safety.

How do I care for my finished kuksa?

Rinse the kuksa by hand with warm water after use and dry it immediately. Do not place it in the dishwasher. Re-oil the kuksa regularly with food-safe wood oil to protect the walnut wood from drying out.

Absolutely! The BeaverCraft DIY07 Kuksa Carving Kit is an excellent gift for carving enthusiasts, Scandinavia fans and outdoor lovers who enjoy working with their hands.

Do I need additional tools?

The BeaverCraft DIY07 includes everything needed for carving. For the food-safe finish, you will additionally need food-safe oil (e.g. linseed oil), which is not included in the kit. A cut-resistant glove is also recommended.
