A 16x binocular opens up maximum reach. Without tripod or image stabiliser not usable – ALPEN Apex Steady models offer electronic stabilisation for handheld Long-Range observation.
A 16x binocular is the right choice for Long-Range wildlife observation in alpine terrain, for horse and motor racing from tribune or roof, for astronomy with tripod and for everyone seeking maximum reach in a binocular – with image stabiliser even fully handheld. For slightly less extreme magnification, a 15x binocular is more agile, for all-round with less tripod need a 12x binocular.
The second number on a 16x binocular (e.g. 16x42) gives the objective diameter. At this magnification, it determines between stabiliser compactness and tripod light gathering:
When handheld: image stabiliser mandatory, battery replaceability, quick activation. When with tripod: solid tripod adapter (1/4"), large objective (at least 50 mm) for sufficient light gathering. ED or HD glass is mandatory at this magnification. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.
Only with image stabiliser. Without, the image is too unsteady for sensible observation. With stabiliser (e.g. ALPEN Apex Steady 16x30), a 16x model is fully usable handheld.
Stabiliser: maximum flexibility, fast observation, no setup. Tripod: constant image stand for hours, suitable for serious astronomy and photo spotting.
A sensor detects hand tremor, a piezoelectric element shifts a lens group minimally in the opposite direction – the image stays stable. Activated by button using batteries.
For stabiliser models often 16x30 or 16x42. For classic tripod models 16x56 or larger for sufficient light gathering.
At 30 mm objective and 16x magnification, the exit pupil is 1.88 mm – bright in daylight. For dusk, larger objectives (16x42, 16x56) are clearly the better choice.
