A 20x binocular reaches near-spotting-scope magnifications – only usable handheld with image stabiliser. ALPEN Apex Steady 20x42 is the top choice for maximum reach without tripod.
A 20x binocular is the right choice for maximum Long-Range observation in alpine terrain, for precision spotting, for astronomy with tripod and for everyone wanting to go beyond 16x handheld. For slightly less extreme magnification, a 16x binocular is more agile, for match shooting with reticle a 15x binocular is the more specialised choice.
The second number on a 20x binocular (e.g. 20x42) gives the objective diameter. At this magnification, it determines between stabiliser compactness and tripod astronomy:
For a 20x binocular, image stabiliser or tripod is mandatory – without, handheld use is impossible. For stabiliser models, check battery replaceability and stabiliser response time. For tripod models, high-quality ED or HD optics are mandatory. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.
Only with image stabiliser. Without, handheld use is impossible. With stabiliser (e.g. ALPEN Apex Steady 20x42), a 20x binocular becomes fully usable handheld.
For two-eyed (binocular) observation, yes – more natural image and less eye fatigue. A spotting scope however goes significantly further with 30-60x and is optically superior at peak magnification.
20x42 as stabiliser model with 2.1 mm exit pupil (bright in daylight). 20x80 as astronomy tripod model with 4.0 mm exit pupil (also good at dusk).
At 42 mm objective and 20x magnification, the exit pupil is 2.1 mm – bright in daylight. For dusk, this class is limited; larger objectives (20x80) clearly better.
Very much so – especially with 80 mm objective (20x80) and fixed tripod. Shows moon craters in detail, Jupiter moons, star clusters and bright deep-sky objects.
