A 25 mm binocular is the bestselling pocket standard. Pocket-friendly with good daytime performance – ideal as a travel binocular, hiking companion, concert and sports binocular. Classic as 8x25 and 10x25.
The objective diameter determines light gathering. With an 8x25 binocular, the exit pupil is 3.13 mm; with 10x25 still 2.5 mm and with 12x25 only 2.08 mm. Sufficiently bright by day, but limited at dusk. For more light gathering in the compact class, the 32 mm binocular is the next step.
On a 25 mm binocular, three magnifications are common:
On a 25 mm binocular, build quality pays off. Look for full rubber armouring, smooth centre focus, multi-coated optics (FMC) and BAK-4 prisms with phase coating. Waterproofness (at least IPX4) makes the pocket binocular outdoor-suitable. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.
Sufficient by day but clearly limited at dusk. For serious dusk observation, 32 mm, 42 mm or larger are recommended.
For pure pocket format and minimal weight the 25 mm. For real all-round use with better dusk performance the 32 mm. Pro: 25 mm about 200 g lighter; con: significantly less light gathering.
Classically 8x25 or 10x25. 8x25 with 3.13 mm exit pupil is brighter and steadier; 10x25 offers more reach. 12x25 only recommended with steady hands and full sun.
Very good. Light weight, robust build and good daytime performance make the 25 mm the classic hiking binocular.
Ideal. Pocket format, easy to stow in a jacket pocket, sufficient magnification for tribune and hall.
