A 56 mm binocular is the pro class for maximum dusk performance and Long-Range observation. Classic as 8x56 (hunting standard), 10x56, 12x56 and 15x56 (match shooting).
The objective diameter determines light gathering. With an 8x56 binocular, the exit pupil is 7.0 mm – dusk maximum for hunters. With 10x56 still 5.6 mm, with 12x56 = 4.67 mm, with 15x56 = 3.73 mm. This means 56 mm delivers about 26 % more light area than a 50 mm binocular – the absolute maximum among classic binoculars.
On a 56 mm binocular, several magnifications are classic:
On a 56 mm binocular it is about pro optics. ED or HD glass is mandatory (any optical weakness becomes visible due to the large objective). Full multi-coating (FMC), BAK-4 prisms with phase coating and IPX7 waterproofness are standard. For 12x56 and larger, tripod adapter (1/4" thread) is mandatory. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.
Because the exit pupil of 7.0 mm is the maximum for dusk observation – the human eye cannot utilise more light in this class. In deep dusk the absolute standard.
56 mm delivers 26 % more light area but is about 200 g heavier. For pure dusk and astronomy clearly 56 mm; for more model selection and all-round the 50 mm.
Maximum. At 8x56 with 7.0 mm exit pupil usable deep into the night – an 8x56 binocular is the professional standard for hunters.
Very good. 15x56 and 16x56 with tripod deliver usable images of moon, star clusters and bright Deep-Sky objects.
8x56 for dusk all-round and hunting, 10x56 for stalking, 12x56 for Long-Range, 15x56 for match shooting and astronomy.
At 8x56 and 10x56 freehand-suitable. From 12x56 recommended, from 15x56 mandatory.
Mandatory. The large objective makes any optical weakness visible – ED or HD glass is essential in this class for good image quality.
