The Brunton Pocket Transit is the world’s most widely used geological compass and the accepted industry standard in field geology. David W. Brunton, a mining engineer from Colorado, grew tired of carrying numerous survey instruments into the field. In 1894 he patented the Pocket Transit – a compact multi-purpose instrument combining compass, clinometer and sighting device in a pocket-sized housing. The name “Pocket Transit” originates from the original patent: the instrument fits in a waistcoat pocket. Today Brunton manufactures the Pocket Transit in several versions – from the Geo Transit for professional geologists to the Axis Transit with its patented dual-axis hollow-hinge technology.
What began in 1894 as a single patent by a mining engineer evolved into the world’s best-known compass brand for field professionals. David Brunton had his original design manufactured by watchmaker William Ainsworth & Sons in Denver. In 1972 businessmen from Riverton, Wyoming, took over production and founded Brunton, Inc. Since 2021 Brunton has been a family-owned, geologist-led company for the first time in its history – with the same unwavering commitment: utmost precision, 100 % Made in USA, and the trust of geologists, surveyors and explorers on every continent.
The Axis Transit represents the latest evolution of the Pocket Transit. Its unique dual-axis hollow hinge allows the lid to rotate 360° around both axes – an innovation that enables measurements on any surface, including overhangs. The north axis runs parallel to the main hinge axis, allowing strike and dip to be measured simultaneously for the first time. Adjustable declination ensures accuracy across North America. The Axis Transit is available in both azimuth (0–360°) and quadrant (0–90°) scales.
The TruArc series comprises baseplate compasses for hikers, hunters, scouts and outdoor sportspeople. From the straightforward entry-level TruArc 3 through the versatile TruArc 5 to the TruArc 15 with mirror sighting and clinometer, the series delivers reliable orientation in the field. All TruArc compasses feature a globally balanced needle for worldwide use and a robust housing built to withstand the demands of everyday outdoor life.
Beyond compasses and transits, Brunton offers further outdoor accessories including camping stove accessories, mantles and can stands. These products complement the range for anyone spending time in nature who values proven quality. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find selected Brunton items for camping, navigation and expedition gear.
