An EDC flashlight (Every Day Carry) is your daily companion for all small and large lighting situations. Compact enough for a pocket, robust enough for years of use – with a balanced mix of brightness, runtime and ease of operation.
An EDC flashlight is used daily – and that determines the requirements. It must be small and light enough not to be in the way (typically under 100 g). It needs a low setting for close-up use (5-50 lumens, easy on the eyes) and a strong setting for unexpected situations (300-1000 lumens). What matters: robustness (full metal, drop-resistant), reliable switch mechanics and a clip for pocket or cap.
Particularly useful for EDC:
Most important: size and weight. An EDC light you don't carry is useless. Test how the light feels in your pocket before buying. Pay attention to a balanced mode arrangement (not every activation immediately at maximum), quiet operation and a neutral light tint (4000-5000 K) for natural colour rendering.
For EDC, 500-1000 lumens maximum is enough. More important than peak output is the low setting (5-50 lumens) and the medium setting (100-300 lumens) – both are used much more often in everyday life.
18650 batteries offer the best mix of capacity and size. For more compact lights, 16340/RCR123A or integrated batteries are common. AA lights are slightly larger but available worldwide.
For daily use, yes. Premium EDC lights often last over 10 years and offer better switches, higher efficiency and more consistent brightness. For occasional use, a more affordable model is enough.
An extremely low brightness level (typically 0.1-5 lumens). Useful for reading in bed, orientation in the bedroom or reading maps without glare – with very long runtime (often weeks).
