The Fenix LR35R is not an ordinary handheld light but a compact searchlight you carry like a flashlight. Six Luminus SST40 high-output LEDs with a 50'000 hour service life deliver 10'000 lumens and 63'200 candela in turbo, which corresponds to a beam distance of 500 metres. Four further levels follow: high with 3'000 lumens and 270 metres, medium with 1'200 lumens and 170 metres, low with 450 lumens and 105 metres, and eco with 50 lumens, 30 metres and 80 hours of runtime. The housing measures 140 mm in length, 46.5 mm at the body and 51.5 mm at the head; with both supplied 21700 batteries the lamp weighs 382 g. Power comes from two Li-ion cells of 4'000 mAh and 3.6 V each, charged directly through USB Type-C at 5V/3A in around 3.5 hours.

Five levels from 50 to 10'000 lumens – and when you need which

Between eco and turbo lies a factor of 200, and that is precisely where the practical value of this lamp sits. To search a forest edge or a field you take turbo with 10'000 lumens and 500 metres; for a brisk march across country, medium with 1'200 lumens, 170 metres and 3 h 15 min of runtime is enough. In camp or when reading a map, eco remains with 50 lumens and 80 hours – enough to get through several nights without thinking about charging. The digital regulation keeps brightness constant on every level instead of letting it sag slowly as the battery voltage drops. Anyone working mainly at short range, however, is better served by a lighter headlamp or a small EDC light.

Operation with one metal switch, memory and lockout

Every operating step runs through a single side switch made of metal – switching on, changing levels, strobe. The memory function starts the lamp on the level you used last, so you do not land in turbo unintentionally every time. The lockout prevents the lamp from switching itself on inside a rucksack, where it would generate heat and drain the batteries. Added to that are the protective functions you only come to appreciate when it matters: intelligent overheat protection, reverse polarity protection against incorrectly inserted batteries, a low voltage warning and a battery capacity indicator that tells you where you stand before you set out.

Batteries, charging and running on USB-C

The LR35R works with two 21700 Li-ion batteries of the ARB-L21-4000P type with 4'000 mAh and 3.6 V each; both are supplied with the lamp, so there is nothing to buy on top. Charging runs through the USB Type-C port on the lamp itself at 5V/3A, and a full cycle takes around 3.5 hours – a power bank connection in a vehicle or at base camp is enough for that. If you want a second set of cells on hand for long deployments, the matching Fenix ARB-L21-4000P batteries are available individually. Without batteries inserted the lamp does not light – the USB port serves for charging, not for mains operation.

What the LR35R delivers – and what it does not

The LR35R is built for search operations, caving, patrols and night work in the field: it brings light to where an ordinary lamp shows you only darkness. With IP68 it is dustproof and waterproof to 2 metres, and the hard-anodised aluminium housing shrugs off falls from 1 metre. What it is not: a lamp for continuous turbo operation – after 1 h 25 min the batteries are empty, and the overheat protection throttles the output when the head gets too hot. As a handheld light for fine work at arm’s length it is also over-specified at 10'000 lumens; for that you use eco, or a smaller lamp altogether. And it does not replace a headlamp when you need both hands free.

The LR35R sits precisely between two worlds. Against a classic searchlight with a carrying handle you gain handiness: 140 mm of length and 382 g with batteries can be carried for hours, worn in a holster and stowed in a rucksack. Against an ordinary handheld light you gain 500 metres of reach and 10'000 lumens – at the cost of a head that is noticeably thicker at 51.5 mm.
