Air-activated heat pads by The HEAT Company – 8 hours of warm feet, no power and no batteries.
Feet get cold when you stand instead of walk. On a hunting stand, at the edge of the slope, or working outdoors, the muscles stop working, circulation drops, and tight boots make it worse. That is exactly where foot warmers come in: they supply the heat your body is no longer sending down there.
All models come from The HEAT Company and use the same reaction as the hand warmers: iron powder, activated carbon, salt and water oxidise in air and give off heat. Open the pack, insert or stick on – done.
Three versions, all lasting 8 hours. The difference is where they sit and whether they stick.
Toe pad and insole are not mutually exclusive. On really cold days you combine them – the pad against cold toes, the insole against the ground. A wider selection of inserts is in the heated insoles category.
First, space. Foot warmers need air to work – and there is little of it inside a shoe. In very tight footwear an insole gets less hot than expected, and the extra bulk presses. If you lace your ski boots tight, the thin toe pad is the better choice.
Second, size. The adhesive insole comes in S and L. An oversized insert buckles inside the shoe and then heats unevenly.
Third, quantity. These are single-use products – multipacks work out considerably better than singles.
All three models last 8 hours. Full temperature is reached within a few minutes, after which they work steadily until the oxygen inside is used up. They cool down gradually at the end rather than stopping abruptly.
Toe warmers are small adhesive pads for the top of the sock, right over the toes – that is where the cold hits first. Insole warmers are flat inserts that sit under the foot and warm the whole sole. Both last 8 hours and can be combined.
Only partly. The pads need oxygen, and a tightly laced shoe lets in less of it – so they run cooler. The extra bulk also presses. In ski boots or narrow hiking shoes the thin toe pad works better than an insole.
The adhesive insole stays put, even when you slip into the shoe or walk longer distances. The loose insert simply goes in and comes out again – handy if you move it between several pairs of shoes. The adhesive version comes in S (36–40) and L (41–46).
No. Toe warmers go on the outside of the sock, insole warmers under the foot inside the shoe. Hours of direct skin contact can cause irritation, because you get used to the steady heat and stop noticing it as too hot.
