A hunting flashlight is more than a strong torch – it is a specialised tool with colour filters, long range and well-thought-out operation. For tracking, stand hunting, stalking and game control, without spooking wildlife.
Game reacts sensitively to white light and flees immediately. Red light is perceived much more weakly by game eyes – ideal for tracking and identification. Green light penetrates vegetation further and is particularly suitable for wild boar, which sees green worse than red. Blue light helps to find blood traces on vegetation. A good hunting light has all three colours via filters or integrated LEDs.
Different requirements depending on the hunting situation:
Crucial is range (at least 300 m with white main LED). A good spot-to-spill ratio delivers far reach without losing the close range entirely. A pressure switch (remote) allows operation while holding the firearm. Mode memory prevents accidentally activating maximum mode at startup (which spooks game). Waterproofness IPX7 or better is mandatory.
Red is standard and well suited for most game species. Green has advantages for wild boar. Blue is used for blood tracking. Those who want all three choose a light with interchangeable filters or integrated multi-colour LEDs.
For most areas, 300-500 m is enough. For high stand with wide view or game control over large distances, 600-1000 m makes sense. More range usually means a larger reflector and more weight.
The legal situation regarding artificial light when hunting varies by canton in Switzerland. Please check applicable regulations before use. For tracking and pure observation, use is usually permitted.
An external pressure switch allows operating the light while keeping the firearm in position. The light is mounted on barrel or hat, the switch operated at forend or thumb.
