Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L
fill once, camp supplied
Six people, three trips to the stream, the same discussion every time? Ten litres in one go cover dinner, washing up and the bottles for the next day – in a single trip.
Buy the Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L – camp supply in a single trip
The Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L is the largest gravity water filter in the BeFree family, intended for groups, base camps and longer stays. The 10-litre reservoir is filled and hung up once, after which the water runs through the EZ-Clean Membrane with its 0.1 µm pore size – no pumping, nobody having to stand by. For a group of six, ten litres typically cover dinner, washing up and the drinking bottles for the following day. At 284 grams the system stays light enough to come along on trekking trips.
More volume, barely more weight
The arithmetic that argues for the 10-litre reservoir
Twenty-one grams separate the 6-litre and 10-litre versions. That is around 8 % more weight for 67 % more volume – a ratio that rarely comes out this clearly in gear planning. The reason is simple: most of the weight sits in the filter cartridge, hose, couplings and strap, and those are identical in both sizes. Only the reservoir film grows. The packed size stays the same too, because both reservoirs fold flat. If you regularly filter for more than four people, or dislike repeated trips to the water at base camp, the 10-litre model therefore comes with virtually no downside.
Ten litres – what that means in camp
As a rule of thumb, camp planning assumes two to three litres of drinking water per person per day, plus water for cooking and washing up. One filling of the 10-litre reservoir therefore covers an evening and the following morning for four to six people – in a single trip to the water. That is precisely where the practical gain lies: the annoying part is not the filtering time but the repeated walking back and forth with full containers over rough ground.
Hanging it up takes some thought
A full 10-litre reservoir weighs ten kilograms. The hanging strap is built for it, but the branch or hook has to be too – and the hanging height simultaneously determines pressure and therefore flow. Proven in practice: fill the reservoir on the ground, hang it only then, and hang it so the outlet sits clear above the collecting container. If no branch is available, a tent pole, a trekking pole in a tripod or a vehicle tailgate works just as well.
What the filter does – and what it does not
With a 0.1 µm pore size the EZ-Clean Membrane removes bacteria, protozoa or cysts, and sediment. Viruses are smaller and are not retained – in regions with that risk you need additional chemical disinfection or UV treatment. Dissolved chemicals, heavy metals and salt likewise stay in the water. For mountain streams, lakes and springs in Europe and North America the filter covers the relevant pathogen spectrum.

10 litres, or is the 6-litre version enough?
The decision depends less on weight than on group size and the distance to the water. Up to four people with the stream in sight, the BeFree Gravity 6L is perfectly sufficient. From five people, on multi-day fixed camps, or when the path to the water source is steep or long, the 10-litre version saves at least one trip every day. Since the extra cost is only 21 grams, and packed size, filter cartridge and spare parts stay identical, the surcharge is usually money well spent. Who is the Katadyn BeFree Gravity 10L for?
The BeFree Gravity 10L is aimed at groups of around five people and up, at fixed camps, and at anyone wanting to organise their water supply with as few trips to the source as possible – from trekking groups and scout camps to emergency preparedness at home.
