It consists of pleated glass fibre with a 0.2 µm pore size and thus retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and suspended solids. How to tell the element is due

The Hiker Pro element does not announce itself with a date but through pump resistance: it becomes increasingly hard to push water through, and less and less arrives despite vigorous pumping. Distinguishing this from other causes matters. Check prefilter and mesh first – if they are clogged, cleaning solves the problem. Then take the filter out of the water and pump dry: if the plunger runs rough or jerky, the pump mechanism is the cause. If both are unremarkable and flow is still permanently weak, the filter element is clogged and gets replaced.
