Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Filter Element
glass fibre with an activated carbon core
Flow dropping while the prefilter is clean? Then the element has reached its end – and a new one turns the filter back into a full unit in two minutes.

The Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element is the heart of Katadyn’s best-selling trekking filter. It consists of pleated glass fibre with a 0.2 µm pore size and thus retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and suspended solids. At its core sits activated carbon that reduces taste and odour compounds – which is why water from the Hiker Pro tastes noticeably more neutral than from a purely mechanical filter. Up to 1'150 litres per element are possible at a flow rate of up to 1 litre per minute.
Large area instead of cleaning
Why a glass fibre element works differently from ceramic
A ceramic filter works with a smooth surface you can brush – but its filter area is limited and flow comparatively low. The Hiker Pro element takes the opposite route: the glass fibre is laid in tight pleats, giving a very large filter area in a small space. That allows up to 1 litre per minute but makes the element impossible to clean – particles lodged in the pleats cannot be got out again. AntiClog technology delays clogging considerably by distributing suspended solids more evenly instead of letting them form a dense surface layer. In the end, though, the element remains a consumable with a clear limit: up to 1'150 litres.
How to tell the element is due
The Hiker Pro element does not announce itself with a date but through pump resistance: it becomes increasingly hard to push water through, and less and less arrives despite vigorous pumping. Distinguishing this from other causes matters. Check prefilter and mesh first – if they are clogged, cleaning solves the problem. Then take the filter out of the water and pump dry: if the plunger runs rough or jerky, the pump mechanism is the cause. If both are unremarkable and flow is still permanently weak, the filter element is clogged and gets replaced.
What the element does – and what it does not
With a 0.2 µm pore size the element reliably retains bacteria, protozoa and suspended solids; the activated carbon core additionally reduces taste and odour compounds. Viruses are smaller than 0.2 µm and pass through – in regions with that risk you need additional chemical disinfection or UV treatment. Dissolved heavy metals and salts are not removed either. For springs, streams and lakes in Europe and North America, the Hiker Pro’s typical use case, the element covers the relevant pathogen spectrum.
Storage and frost – two frequently underestimated points
A used element stays damp, and moisture plus warmth encourages microbial growth inside. Let the element dry out openly after the trip before stowing the filter. Just as important: frost. If residual water freezes in the element, the fibre structure can be damaged – without this being visible from outside. An element that has frozen through should not be used further. Anyone storing the filter over winter or carrying it in a car should keep this in mind.

A spare element belongs on every longer trip
Because the Hiker Pro element cannot be cleaned, its service life of up to 1'150 litres ends at some point – usually not when it suits you. Anyone travelling for weeks or filtering from turbid sources therefore carries a second element: it weighs little, changes without tools and, in case of doubt, replaces an entire water supply. Two things noticeably extend service life: an intact mesh from the maintenance kit, and an intake point kept out of the sediment with the float.
