Buy the Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element – glass fibre with a carbon core

The Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element is the heart of Katadyn’s best-selling trekking filter. It consists of pleated glass fibre with a 0.2 µm pore size and thus retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and suspended solids. At its core sits activated carbon that reduces taste and odour compounds – which is why water from the Hiker Pro tastes noticeably more neutral than from a purely mechanical filter. Up to 1'150 litres per element are possible at a flow rate of up to 1 litre per minute.

Large area instead of cleaning

Why a glass fibre element works differently from ceramic

A ceramic filter works with a smooth surface you can brush – but its filter area is limited and flow comparatively low. The Hiker Pro element takes the opposite route: the glass fibre is laid in tight pleats, giving a very large filter area in a small space. That allows up to 1 litre per minute but makes the element impossible to clean – particles lodged in the pleats cannot be got out again. AntiClog technology delays clogging considerably by distributing suspended solids more evenly instead of letting them form a dense surface layer. In the end, though, the element remains a consumable with a clear limit: up to 1'150 litres.

How to tell the element is due

The Hiker Pro element does not announce itself with a date but through pump resistance: it becomes increasingly hard to push water through, and less and less arrives despite vigorous pumping. Distinguishing this from other causes matters. Check prefilter and mesh first – if they are clogged, cleaning solves the problem. Then take the filter out of the water and pump dry: if the plunger runs rough or jerky, the pump mechanism is the cause. If both are unremarkable and flow is still permanently weak, the filter element is clogged and gets replaced.

What the element does – and what it does not

With a 0.2 µm pore size the element reliably retains bacteria, protozoa and suspended solids; the activated carbon core additionally reduces taste and odour compounds. Viruses are smaller than 0.2 µm and pass through – in regions with that risk you need additional chemical disinfection or UV treatment. Dissolved heavy metals and salts are not removed either. For springs, streams and lakes in Europe and North America, the Hiker Pro’s typical use case, the element covers the relevant pathogen spectrum.

Storage and frost – two frequently underestimated points

A used element stays damp, and moisture plus warmth encourages microbial growth inside. Let the element dry out openly after the trip before stowing the filter. Just as important: frost. If residual water freezes in the element, the fibre structure can be damaged – without this being visible from outside. An element that has frozen through should not be used further. Anyone storing the filter over winter or carrying it in a car should keep this in mind.

A spare element belongs on every longer trip

Because the Hiker Pro element cannot be cleaned, its service life of up to 1'150 litres ends at some point – usually not when it suits you. Anyone travelling for weeks or filtering from turbid sources therefore carries a second element: it weighs little, changes without tools and, in case of doubt, replaces an entire water supply. Two things noticeably extend service life: an intact mesh from the maintenance kit, and an intake point kept out of the sediment with the float. Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Filter Element

Answers around the Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element – from pore size and AntiClog to service life, replacement and Swiss shipping.

What pore size does the Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element have?
0.2 µm. That reliably retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and suspended solids. Viruses are smaller and pass through the element.
How much water does the Hiker Pro element filter?
Up to 1'150 litres per element at a flow rate of up to 1 litre per minute. The volume actually achieved depends heavily on raw water quality – turbid water with a high load of suspended solids shortens service life considerably.
Can I clean the Hiker Pro filter element?
No. Unlike a ceramic candle, the pleated glass fibre element cannot be brushed – particles lodged in the pleats cannot be got out again. The element is a consumable and is replaced once flow declines permanently.
What does AntiClog technology do?
It delays clogging of the filter medium by distributing suspended solids more evenly across the filter area instead of letting them form a dense surface layer. That maintains flow for longer – but does not replace prefiltration.
What is the activated carbon core in the element for?
It reduces taste and odour compounds, so filtered water tastes more neutral than from a purely mechanical filter. Do not rely on it for heavy metals or chemicals – the carbon content is too small for that.
How do I know the element needs replacing?
Pump resistance rises and less and less water arrives despite vigorous pumping. First check the prefilter and mesh, and the pump plunger with a dry test – if both are fine and flow stays weak, the element is clogged.
Do I need tools to change the element?
No, the change works without tools and therefore also on the trail. Work with clean hands and make sure the element O-ring is correctly seated so no raw water gets past the element.
How do I store the filter correctly between trips?
Let the element dry out openly after use before stowing the filter – a damp element in a warm environment encourages microbial growth inside. Then store the filter dry and frost-free.
What happens if the element has frozen?
Freezing residual water can damage the fibre structure without this being visible from outside. An element that has frozen through should not be used further, because filtration performance is no longer assured – this applies particularly to winter storage or transport in a car.
How fast does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element?
Orders placed before 17:00 usually ship the same working day. We send with Swiss Post, and delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 working days. Orders from CHF 100 ship free of charge.
Why buy the Katadyn Hiker Pro replacement filter element from Swiss-Sale.ch?
Swiss-Sale.ch is an official Swiss dealer for Katadyn. You get fast shipping from a Swiss warehouse (no customs, no waiting), personal advice on filters and spare parts, and warranty handling directly in Switzerland.
Is the Hiker Pro alone enough for safe drinking water?
For springs, streams and lakes in Europe and North America the element covers the relevant pathogen spectrum. In regions with a virus risk in drinking water, mechanical filtration alone is not enough – add chemical disinfection or UV treatment there. Also keep the raw and clean water sides strictly separate so you do not recontaminate the filtered water afterwards.
