Buy the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D – the original bulb for Maglite® 3C and 3D-cell flashlights

The Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D is the official Maglite® replacement bulb for the classic 3C- and 3D-cell torches. It uses the patented Mag-Num Star® II Xenon technology and delivers the typical bright, slightly warm-white light that the classic Maglite® torches have been known for over decades. When your existing bulb has burnt out after years of service, the new one slots into the reflector module within seconds – no tools needed.

Important: the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D fits exclusively in Maglite® torches with 3C- or 3D-cell configuration (three C- or D-cells). For 2-cell, 4-cell, 5-cell and 6-cell models there are dedicated Mag-Num Star® II Xenon bulbs with matching voltage. The bulb ships in a single-piece package – no reflector, no end cap, just the bulb as a wear part for direct swap in the reflector module of your existing torch.

Xenon technology from Bavarian production – why the original is worth it

For Maglite® torches there is a wide selection of after-market bulbs. The Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D is, however, the official Mag-Num Star® II original from Maglite®'s own facility in Bavaria. Benefits: exact-fit base without wobble or contact issues, tuned voltage for 3-cell operation (no burn-out from wrong volt rating), even brightness over lifespan and a beam pattern tuned to the Maglite® reflector. The result: not a diffuse cone but the characteristic focused Maglite® spot the classic torches are famous for.

Which Maglite® models is the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D made for?

The Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D fits all classic Maglite® torches with 3C- or 3D-cell configuration – the mid-size classics running on three C-cells (slightly slimmer) or three D-cells (the largest classic). If your torch has been with you since the 80s, 90s or 2000s and runs on three batteries, this bulb is the right spare. For LED versions (ML, XL series) and the smaller Mini Maglite® / Solitaire® it does NOT fit – dedicated replacement bulbs exist for those.

What is Mag-Num Star® II Xenon – and why is it a good choice?

Maglite® has used a Xenon bulb as the standard replacement in their classic torches for decades. Compared to krypton or basic halogen bulbs, Xenon delivers brighter and slightly whiter light at the same current draw. The Mag-Num Star® II is the second generation of this design and visibly brighter than the original first-generation bulbs (typically 20–50 % depending on the comparison). It is still manufactured in Bavaria in Maglite®'s own facility – a rarity for an international US brand product.

Replacing the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D in 3 steps

1.) Unscrew the end cap of your Maglite® and remove the three C- or D-cells. 2.) Unscrew the reflector head and take out the reflector module – the old bulb sits centrally on the base. 3.) Carefully pull the old bulb out, insert the new Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D and refit the reflector. Re-insert the batteries, close the end cap, test the torch. Important: do not touch the bulb glass with bare fingers – skin oils on the glass shorten the lifespan. Use a clean cloth or the original packaging as a holder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D

Here you will find answers about the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D – from compatibility and brightness to swap, care and Swiss shipping.

Which Maglite® models does the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D fit?
All classic Maglite® torches with three C- or three D-cells (3C-cell and 3D-cell). These are the mid-size and large classic Maglites with a Xenon original bulb. For 2C, 4C, 5C, 6D and all LED models (ML and XL series) the bulb does NOT fit – there are dedicated Mag-Num Star® replacement bulbs for those.
Is the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D a LED or incandescent solution?
A classic incandescent bulb with Xenon fill (Mag-Num Star® II Xenon technology). It produces the typical Maglite® beam pattern and the characteristic focused spot. For LED conversions of compatible models there are separate Maglite® LED upgrade modules – but those are a different product, not a bulb.
How much brightness does the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D deliver?
The Mag-Num Star® II generation is 20–50 % brighter than standard first-generation original-fitment bulbs depending on the comparison. Specific lumen figures for classic incandescent bulbs are hard to give because the beam depends heavily on the Maglite® reflector. Subjectively the torch delivers significantly higher and bluer-bright output after the swap compared to a yellowed original bulb.
Do I need tools to replace the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D?
No. Maglite® torches are designed so the reflector head and end cap can be unscrewed by hand. Pull the old bulb out of the reflector module carefully, insert the new one straight in and screw everything back together. No tools needed.
May I touch the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D glass with bare fingers?
We don't recommend it. Skin oils on the glass can burn in when heated and shorten the bulb's lifespan. Ideally hold the bulb by the metal pins or use a clean cloth for insertion. If you accidentally touched the glass, wipe with a dry cloth and some lens cleaner.
Does the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D ship with reflector or end cap?
No. You receive a single bulb as a pure spare part. Reflector and end cap of your existing torch are reused. These Maglite® components are durable and practically never need replacement – only the bulb.
Where is the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D made?
In Bavaria, Germany. Maglite® runs its own bulb factory in southern Germany where the Mag-Num Star® bulbs have been produced for decades – a rarity for a US brand product.
What sets the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D apart from after-market bulbs?
OEM base with exact fit, voltage tuned to 3-cell operation and a beam pattern matched precisely to the Maglite® parabolic reflector. After-market bulbs usually work too but often differ in colour temperature, beam shape or lifespan. With the original you get exactly what Maglite® fits at the factory.
How long does the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D last?
Classic incandescent bulbs have a typical lifespan of a few hundred operating hours – less than LED but with a warm-soft beam pattern that many Maglite® owners prefer to the harsh cool light of LEDs. With normal household and camping use the bulb usually lasts several years.
How fast does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D?
Orders placed by 5:00 pm are usually dispatched the same business day. We ship with Swiss Post. Delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 business days. Orders from CHF 100 ship free of charge.
Why buy the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D at Swiss-Sale.ch?
Swiss-Sale.ch is an official Swiss dealer for Maglite®. You benefit from fast shipping within Switzerland, personal expert advice and warranty handling directly in Switzerland – no sending abroad.
What should I watch out for when installing the Maglite Mag-Num Star II Xenon Bulb 3C/3D?
1.) Fully discharge the torch or remove the batteries before unscrewing the head. 2.) Push the bulb straight into the base without canting – both pins must engage in sync. 3.) Carefully refit the reflector and tighten the head until it stops – do not over-tighten. 4.) Before installing, check whether the old bulb actually is defective (sometimes only the battery contacts are oxidised – clean with cotton swab and alcohol).
