Flashlights with powerbank function are dual-purpose devices: primarily light source, secondarily energy storage for charging other USB devices. Outdoor, on travel or in emergencies they deliver an additional smartphone charge – without carrying a separate powerbank.
In outdoor and travel use the dual function saves weight and volume. Instead of flashlight + powerbank you carry only one device. In emergencies (power outage, breakdown) the ability to charge a smartphone for an emergency call is life-saving – especially when the lamp is anyway carried as «always-carry». In professional use (field service, service technicians) the function allows charging the phone before important calls without searching for power.
In design powerbank flashlights differ:
Most important: battery capacity. A standard smartphone battery has 3'000-5'000 mAh – a powerbank flashlight should have at least 5'000 mAh to deliver a full charge. For multi-day use 10'000 mAh is sensible. Check USB standard (USB-C is mandatory today). Look for Quick-Charge or Power-Delivery support – otherwise smartphone charging is very slow. Important: with integrated powerbank, LED runtime drops when a phone is charged – check how the system prioritises. Some models deactivate the LED during USB output, others share energy. In emergency the reserve indicator (battery status) is important.
For a typical smartphone battery (4'000 mAh) and conversion losses about 1.5-2 full charges. For smaller phones (3'000 mAh) also 2-2.5 charges. Tablets need significantly more energy and are usually only partially charged.
For integrated systems yes – depending on how much energy is given to USB devices, LED reserve decreases accordingly. Check capacity and plan reserves. Models with separated battery systems are advantageous in this regard.
USB-C is standard for modern smartphones, tablets and laptops. USB-A is still used but slow. Recommendation: USB-C with Power-Delivery (PD) for fast charging, optionally additional USB-A for older devices.
Yes, about 50-100 g additional through larger battery and USB jack. For outdoor users this is usually still lighter than carrying flashlight + separate powerbank.
