Trail cameras (also called wildlife cameras or camera traps) are autonomous surveillance cameras that automatically capture photos or videos when motion is detected. At their core, they use a passive infrared sensor (PIR) that registers heat changes in the detection area – for example when an animal or person crosses the sensor zone. During the day they deliver sharp colour photos; at night they switch to infrared illumination and produce black-and-white images without disturbing wildlife.
Thanks to battery power and weatherproof housings, trail cameras can operate autonomously in the field for weeks or months. Images are stored on an SD card and can be retrieved during a site visit. Cellular models with SIM cards go one step further: they send images directly via MMS, email or a cloud app to your smartphone – keeping you informed without visiting the camera.
Trigger speed indicates how quickly the camera takes a photo after detecting motion. Fast cameras with 0.3–0.5 seconds reliably capture animals moving quickly through the frame. Slower triggers (1–2 seconds) are sufficient for stationary monitoring such as feeding stations or property entrances.
No-glow cameras (940 nm) use invisible infrared LEDs – ideal when the camera must remain undetected. Low-glow cameras (850 nm) produce a faint reddish glow but often deliver better night image quality and greater flash range.
