BCB Waterproof Survival Kit
Emergency essentials in an orange roll-top pouch with a clear window
A survival kit only earns its place if it stays dry and stays on you, instead of sinking to the bottom of your pack. The BCB Waterproof Survival Kit puts a firesteel, wire saw, signal mirror, whistle and 10 water purification tablets into an orange roll-top pouch you wear on your belt or round your neck – 198 g at 120 × 195 mm.
Buy the BCB Waterproof Survival Kit – fire, water, signalling and tools in a 198 g pouch
The BCB Waterproof Survival Kit (manufacturer part no. CK050) is a compact survival kit for camping, hiking and emergency preparedness. BCB International of Cardiff packs the basics for five jobs into an orange pouch with a roll-top closure: lighting a fire with matches and a firesteel, treating water with 10 water purification tablets, attracting attention with a signal mirror, emergency whistle and micro LED light, cutting and sawing with a mini folding knife and wire saw, and mending with wire, cord, duct tape and a sewing kit. The kit measures 120 × 195 mm and weighs 198 g, and it rides on its belt loop or on the cord round your neck.
Why the pouch is more than packaging
Roll-top, window, signal chart – the pouch is part of the kit
With many emergency kits the container is an afterthought. Here it does a job of its own. The orange pouch is easy to see, out on the ground as much as inside a full pack. The black roll-top is rolled down three times and secured with the buckle, and the instruction is printed right on the pouch. A clear window on the back shows where each item sits, so you are not emptying everything out to find the whistle. On the front, BCB prints a Ground to Air Signalling Guide with six pictograms, which means the signals do not have to be pieced together from memory under stress. You carry the kit on the belt loop or on the drawstring cord with toggle round your neck.
Fire and water – two routes to a flame, 10 tablets for drinking water
Fire is warmth, light and a signal in one, so the kit carries two independent ways of making it: a book of matches for a quick start, and a firesteel with striker which is still there once the matches are used up. A button compass sits in the firesteel handle – a rough guide to direction, not a substitute for a map and a proper compass. A tealight candle provides a small, steady flame. If you want to practise fire lighting properly, add tinder and further ignition aids from our firelighters and fire starters. For water, the kit holds 10 water purification tablets. Dose them as stated on the pack, which also carries the expiry date.
Being seen and heard – mirror, whistle, light and ground-to-air signals
Anyone who needs help has to be able to attract attention – by day, by night and over distance. The BCB Waterproof Survival Kit gives you four means of doing so: the signal mirror for sunlight, the emergency whistle for sound signals when shouting costs too much energy, the micro LED light for the dark, and the orange pouch itself. Then there is the printed signal chart. Its six pictograms cover communication from the ground to an aircraft or helicopter crew: Yes, No, All OK, Pick us up, Do not attempt to land, and Need medical assistance urgently / Land here. More signalling gear and equipment for emergencies is in our survival equipment range.
Cut, saw, mend, fish – the small parts for improvised fixes
Everything else in the pouch is tooling and consumables for whatever tears, breaks or goes missing on the way. Cutting is done with the mini folding knife and two razor blades, sawing with the wire saw, which coils up to almost nothing. For tying and fixing there are nylon cord, duct tape and two cable ties, plus roughly 3.6 m of gold-coloured wire – for repairs to your equipment, for example. The manufacturer also mentions snares as a use; in Switzerland, snares must not be used for hunting (Swiss Hunting Ordinance, Art. 2). Torn clothing, straps or tent fabric are dealt with using the sewing kit and the six safety pins. The fishing kit consists of line, 4 hooks, 4 swivels and 4 split shot. A clear tube and a pencil are in there too, and two documents complete the contents: the Survival Instructions and the Accident Evaluation Report, a form for recording an accident.
What the BCB Waterproof Survival Kit does – and what it does not
“Waterproof” has a precise meaning with this kit: with the closure rolled down three times and the buckle fastened, the pouch keeps rain and splashes away from the contents. BCB states just as plainly on the pouch what it is not for: “Not intended for submersion or flotation”. It is neither a dive bag nor a buoyancy aid. If you fall into water with the kit, or hold it under, you cannot count on the contents staying dry. Second, there are no dressings or bandages inside. The kit covers fire, water, signalling and repairs, but not wound care – put that together separately, for instance from our First Aid & Emergency category. Third, the instructions and the accident report are in English only, and they are better read at home than for the first time in an emergency. Fourth, the tools are deliberately small: the mini folding knife and the wire saw are stopgaps and do not replace a full-size knife or saw on a planned trip. And the water purification tablets are consumables with an expiry date – it is printed on the pack and wants checking before the kit disappears into a rucksack for years.

Who is the BCB Waterproof Survival Kit for?
BCB names camping, hiking and outdoor activities in general, along with emergency preparedness. In practice this is the kit which comes along as a reserve: on your belt for a day walk, in the lid pocket of your pack, or with the emergency supplies at home. At 198 g and 120 × 195 mm it hardly registers, and because the contents come ready assembled you are not hunting down the small parts one by one. It does not replace full touring equipment – it is the fallback for a day which turns out differently from the plan. If you would rather carry a belt pouch with more in it, take a look at the BCB Survival System: 18 items in a belt pouch, including an emergency sleeping bag, water bag and foil tray – but without the waterproof roll-top pouch.
