A 36 mm binocular sits between compact and all-round class: clearly more light gathering than 32 mm, noticeably lighter than 42 mm. Bushnell Forge and some premium models use this class.
The objective diameter determines light gathering. With an 8x36 binocular, the exit pupil is 4.5 mm; with 10x36 still 3.6 mm. This puts 36 mm noticeably above 32 mm in light gathering – with only slightly increased weight. For full dusk suitability, the 42 mm binocular is the next step.
On a 36 mm binocular, two magnifications are typical:
36 mm is a premium bridge class: ED glass, phase coating and magnesium housing are common. Look for waterproofness (IPX7), short close focus distance and long eye relief. General buying criteria on the main category Binoculars & Field Glasses.
36 mm brings about 27 % more light area at only slightly higher weight. For nature observation the step is worth it; for pure hiking 32 mm is enough.
36 mm is significantly lighter and more compact, 42 mm delivers about 36 % more light area. For serious dusk the 42 mm; for compact premium all-round the 36 mm.
Classically 8x36 as an all-round configuration with balanced field of view and image brightness. 10x36 for more reach.
Bushnell with the Forge series is a well-known manufacturer. Other premium series also use this class as a bridge format between compact and all-round.
