Learning to carve – why a complete kit is the best entry choice

If you’ve never carved before, you face three questions at once when shopping: which tool? which wood? and how does it actually work? That’s exactly where our complete carving kits come in. What’s inside a complete carving kit?

The exact contents vary by kit, but the basic framework is consistent:

Beginner kits like Comfort Bird or Wizard contain one carving knife. Spoon or kuksa kits contain two blades (straight plus hook). The Standing Bear and Family Fun kits include extra wood for variations.

Which wood is used?

Three woods dominate the complete kits:

• Basswood (linden) is the carving wood number one: soft, evenly grown, doesn’t splinter. Ideal for figures like Comfort Bird, Wizard, Bear, Santa, Dala Horse, Swiss cow. If you need more basswood for your own projects later, you’ll find it in the filter category Carving Wood.
• Walnut wood is used in the Kuksa kit. Walnut is harder than basswood, has a beautiful grain pattern and is food-safe – making it ideal for drinking vessels.
• Birch wood in the sauna ladle – traditional Nordic wood, heat-resistant and tolerant to moisture, which makes it predestined for sauna ladles.

Carving step by step – how a kit project flows

Every complete kit comes with an illustrated guide. The typical workflow is similar though, whether you’re carving the bear or the spoon:

• Preparation: set up your workspace with a cut-protection mat, lay out the tools, skim the guide. Cut-resistant glove on the holding hand – mandatory, not optional.
• Rough shape: with the carving knife, you follow the guide markings on the blank and remove larger material first. The rough silhouette emerges.
• Mid shape: now the contours sharpen. With figures, you shape legs, arms, body axes. With spoons, the outer profile.
• Hollowing (only spoons/kuksa): the hook knife comes into play, the cavity is systematically scooped out. Multiple thin layers rather than one deep cut.
• Detail work: small cuts for eyes, feathers, ornaments. A detail knife like the C7 helps here – some kits include a second blade for this.
• Finish: smooth with sandpaper or fine cuts, then rub with linseed oil (essential for kuksa and spoons).

Which carving kit is right for you

Safety while carving – especially for beginners and children

Carving with sharp tools demands respect. Three basic rules that every carving kit introduces:

• Cut protection on the holding hand: always wear a cut-resistant glove (e. g. Nitras Taeki 6730) on the hand that holds the wood. The cutting hand stays unguarded for better feel. With children: an adult companion is also mandatory. More options under Cut Protection.
• Cutting direction away from the body: never cut towards the body. The thumb of the holding hand should never lie in the cutting direction.
• A sharp knife is a safe knife: dull blades slip. Better to strop regularly than to sharpen rarely. During longer projects, run the blade across the strop in between.
