A hunting knife is the most important tool for the hunter after the rifle. It must perform reliably on the first cut, work precisely during gralloching, lead safely during the coup-de-grâce stab, and still be ready for use after the tenth game-meat application. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find selected hunting knives from our Swiss warehouse – from the robust Gerber Strongarm Camp and the popular Ruike Jager F118 to the BeaverCraft bushcraft line, the Swedish Hultafors OK models and the compact Camillus Animal knife.

Our selection focuses on real working knives from established brands: Gerber Gear from the USA for robust outdoor and tactical blades, Ruike with high-quality D2 and 14C28N steel at fair prices, BeaverCraft from Ukraine for classic bushcraft knives with leather sheaths, Hultafors from Sweden with traditional carbon steel and Scandi grind, and Camillus for the pragmatic entry-level segment.

Which hunting-knife type for which use?

The right hunting knife depends on the intended use. Three types are represented in our range:

Fixed blade (full tang)

15 of 18 hunting knives in our range have a fixed blade with full tang. This makes them extremely stable – ideal for gralloching cloven-hoofed game, splitting breastbone and pelvic bone, and for rough bushcraft work. The typical blade shape is the drop point: slightly raised tip preventing accidental cutting of the entrails. BeaverCraft, Gerber and Ruike offer the most models in this construction.

Folding hunting knives

Three models – the Ruike P127-CB, the Ruike P166-AB Tanto and the Gerber Sumo – are folding hunting knives. They rarely replace a full-fledged gralloching knife, but are unbeatable as a secondary or backup knife – for stalking, quick field dressing at the high seat, or as a backup in the rucksack. Important for Switzerland: locking and blade length determine the legal classification – more on this in the section on Swiss law.

Tanto and Sheepsfoot blades

For a particularly stable tip for rough penetration tasks, choose a Tanto blade (e.g. Ruike P166-AB). The Sheepsfoot blade with straight edge and rounded back is a classic skinning and detail tool. Both are special blade shapes for specific applications.

Blade steel – what do the names mean?

Steel determines edge retention, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening. Here is an overview of the most common steel types in our range:

Brands in our range

Gerber Gear from Portland, Oregon, has been making outdoor and tactical knives since 1939. The Strongarm line has been a classic with forest services, hunters and tactical users worldwide for years. Characteristic features are full tangs, diamond-texture handle scales and dual-mount MOLLE-compatible sheaths.

Ruike is a Chinese manufacturer that has made a name for itself with high-quality D2 and Sandvik steel at fair prices. The Jager F118 line was developed explicitly for hunting – with drop-point blade, G-10 handle and MOLLE sheath. The F186 range moves toward outdoor all-rounders with particularly hard-wearing D2 tool steel.

BeaverCraft is a Ukrainian manufacturer specialising in bushcraft and outdoor knives with leather sheaths. The BSH (Bushcraft Heavy) line offers cleanly executed Scandi grinds, walnut or ash handles and full-tang construction at fair prices.

Hultafors from Hults Bruk, Sweden, is a heritage brand with over 325 years of forging tradition. The OK outdoor knives (OK1 and OK4) use 3 mm Japanese carbon steel at 58–60 HRC with EPD anti-corrosion coating. Characteristic features are the Scandi grind for precise carving and the sharpened spine that works with any ferro rod. The OK4 extends the concept with a Santoprene friction handle and integrated ferro-rod pocket – ideal for hunters who value the bushcraft and survival aspects of their activity equally.

Camillus from the USA is one of the oldest American knife makers (founded 1876). The Animal model shows the typical Camillus signature: pragmatic design, robust carbonitride coating, compact dimensions – ideal as an entry or backup knife.

Hunting-knife law in Switzerland
What may I carry, what not?

In Switzerland the Weapons Act (WG) regulates the handling of knives (Art. 4 para. 1 lit. c WG together with Art. 7 WV). Generally prohibited knives are: butterfly knives, throwing knives with symmetrical blades, daggers with symmetrical blades, and knives with a one-handed automatic or spring-assisted opening mechanism (switchblades) – but only if they are also more than 12 cm in overall length when opened AND have a blade over 5 cm. Permitted are: fixed-blade knives without any blade-length restriction, classic folding knives and one-hand manually operated models (thumb stud, thumb hole, flipper, wave feature) – also with blade locking – as long as no spring mechanism assists the opening. For legitimate hunting, carrying is explicitly permitted in any case. Cantonal regulations regarding carry outside the hunting context may apply additionally.

Frequently Asked Questions – Hunting Knives

Are hunting knives legal in Switzerland?
Yes. Fixed-blade hunting knives are permitted without any blade-length restriction and are not classified as weapons under the Swiss Weapons Act (WG). Classic folding knives and one-hand manually operated models (thumb stud, thumb hole, flipper, wave feature) are also generally permitted – even with a locking blade – as long as they have no automatic or spring-assisted opening mechanism. Prohibited are: switchblades or spring-assisted knives (if opened over 12 cm and blade over 5 cm), butterfly knives, throwing knives and daggers with symmetrical blades. Anyone carrying a hunting knife outside legitimate hunting should be able to provide a factual reason (profession, outdoor activity). Please also check cantonal regulations.
Which hunting knife is the best recommendation for beginners?
For starting out we recommend the BeaverCraft BSH4 Dusk (CHF 84.50) as a fixed-blade bushcraft hunting knife with leather sheath and Scandi grind. For a model designed specifically for hunting, choose the Ruike Jager F118-G (CHF 79.90) with Sandvik 14C28N blade and MOLLE sheath. For a tighter budget with bushcraft character, choose the Hultafors OK4 (CHF 31.90) with Scandi grind, Japanese carbon steel and ferro-rod pocket, or the Camillus Animal from CHF 39.90 with carbonitride coating as a backup knife.
What is the difference between D2 steel and Sandvik 14C28N?
D2 is a high-alloy tool steel with extraordinarily high edge retention – the top material in our range, found in the Ruike F186 models. However, D2 is only semi-stainless and should be stored dry. Sandvik 14C28N is fully stainless, slightly less hard-wearing than D2 but easier to sharpen and more carefree in everyday use – found in the Ruike Jager F118 models. For most hunters, 14C28N is the more low-maintenance and everyday-suitable choice.
What does «full tang» mean?
The tang is the extension of the blade into the handle. Full tang means the blade runs through the entire handle in full width and length. This makes the knife extremely stable – ideal for rough work such as splitting breastbone or pelvic bone. 15 of 18 models in our hunting-knife range have full tang – including all BeaverCraft and Gerber Strongarm models.
What blade length do I need for a hunting knife?
For gralloching cloven-hoofed game, 9 to 11 cm blade length is entirely sufficient. A longer blade offers few advantages but is more cumbersome. Stalking knives often have somewhat longer but narrower blades for the coup de grâce. Important: in Switzerland there is no general blade-length restriction for hunting knives or folding knives – the 5 cm/12 cm threshold applies exclusively to knives with a spring-assisted or automatic opening mechanism (switchblades).
What is a drop-point blade and why is it ideal for hunting?
The drop-point blade has a slightly raised, «teardrop-shaped» tip located below the blade midline. It prevents accidental cutting of the entrails during gralloching and offers a large, robust edge for skinning and field dressing. 15 of 18 models in our hunting-knife range have drop-point blades – this is the universally best blade shape for hunting.
Is a folding hunting knife sensible?
A folding hunting knife is a good complement, but rarely replaces a fixed-blade gralloching knife. Advantages are compact storage in the rucksack, easy belt-carrying outside hunting and lower injury risk during transport. Recommended for stalking trips: the Ruike P127-CB folding knife or the Gerber Sumo. For actual gralloching, a fixed blade is more stable and more hygienic.
What sets the Hultafors OK1 and OK4 apart?
The Hultafors OK outdoor knives come from Hults Bruk in Sweden – a forge with over 325 years of tradition. Both models have 3 mm Japanese carbon steel at 58–60 HRC, Scandi grind and EPD anti-corrosion coating. The sharpened spine works with any ferro rod. The OK1 (CHF 29.00) is the heavier working version with a batoning-capable 82-mm tang; the OK4 (CHF 31.90) adds a Santoprene friction handle with integrated ferro-rod pocket – perfect for hunters who want to combine bushcraft and outdoor aspects of their pursuit.
How do I care for my hunting knife after use?
After every game-meat application, clean the blade with warm water and a little washing-up liquid, dry thoroughly. Carbon-steel blades (BeaverCraft, Hultafors OK1/OK4) should be lightly oiled to prevent rust – even with the EPD coating on the Hultafors models this is recommended. D2 steel (Ruike F186) should be stored dry. Fully stainless blades in 14C28N, 7Cr17MoV or 440A are low-maintenance. Treat wooden handles (BeaverCraft) occasionally with wood oil; store leather sheaths dry and treat with leather grease. For sharpening, water stones (grit 800/3000) or diamond stones are suitable.
What distinguishes the Ruike Jager F118 line from the Ruike F186?
The Ruike Jager F118 line was designed explicitly for hunting – with Sandvik 14C28N (fully stainless, everyday-suitable), classic drop-point blade, green or black G-10 handle and MOLLE-compatible sheath. The Ruike F186 range is more of an outdoor all-rounder with particularly hard-wearing D2 tool steel – the most edge-retaining blade in the range, but only semi-stainless and requiring slightly more care.
