The Katadyn Carbodyn filter element is an activated carbon element for Katadyn filter housings, typically combined with a ceramic element in a double housing. It adsorbs free chlorine and organic contaminants and thus noticeably improves taste and odour. What stands out is the documented performance: over 90 % chlorine reduction across at least 10'000 litres and over 90 % lead reduction across at least 10'000 litres as well. Service life is 12 months or 16'000 litres, whichever comes first.

Why the Carbodyn never works alone

Activated carbon binds dissolved substances but retains no microorganisms. Worse still, a damp, nutrient-rich carbon surface can even offer bacteria a habitat. Katadyn therefore consistently uses the Carbodyn in combination with a ceramic element – typically in a double housing, where the ceramic provides microbiological safety and the activated carbon handles chlorine, lead and taste compounds. A Carbodyn alone does not make microbiologically contaminated water drinkable. If you want both effects in a single part, choose the Gravidyn element instead.

Two limits, and both count

The Carbodyn’s service life is limited twice over: to 16'000 litres of throughput or to 12 months from commissioning – whichever is reached first. The reason for the time limit lies in the nature of activated carbon: it keeps adsorbing even when barely any water flows, for instance odours from the surroundings and residual chlorine from water standing in the housing. After twelve months the internal surface is largely occupied even at low consumption. Note the installation date – unlike ceramic there is no visible wear indicator.

Technical installation data

The element has a G 1/4″ external thread and measures 26.8 × 5.5 cm. Dry it weighs around 300 g, in water-filled operation about 530 g – a difference that can matter when sizing mounts. Permissible operating pressure is 1 to 7 bar and water temperature 5 to 35 °C. That covers normal mains pressure for household installation; at higher pressure a pressure reducer should be fitted upstream.

Carbodyn plus ceramic, or Gravidyn instead?
