Buy the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element – replacement for the drip filter

The Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element is the replacement candle for Katadyn drip filters and for single and double housings in the Endurance series. Its microporous ceramic with a 0.2 µm pore size retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, algae, suspended solids and rust particles. Silver bound into the material inhibits bacterial growth inside the element itself – important given the long idle periods of a gravity filter. Each element filters up to 50'000 litres or withstands around 100 cleanings. Note: a drip filter needs three elements; this listing is for one piece.

A drip filter runs on three candles

Why you need three elements – and when all three are due

The Katadyn drip filter runs three ceramic candles in parallel. That split increases filter area and thus throughput to up to 4 litres per hour – with a single candle the device would be too slow for groups. Because all three elements see the same volume of water, they wear at roughly the same rate: when one is finished, the other two are usually close behind. In practice it therefore pays to replace all three together – that avoids a second change a few weeks later and keeps output even.

♾️ 3 × 50'000 L gives up to 150'000 litres total capacity

Depth filter rather than membrane – hence the long service life

The filtering effect of Katadyn ceramic sits not on a thin surface but throughout the cross-section of the material. When the outermost layer loads up with suspended solids, you brush it off and expose fresh filter material. Around 100 such cycles are possible per element, until the supplied gauge ring signals that minimum diameter has been reached. Up to 50'000 litres accumulate by then – a multiple of what a disposable cartridge manages, and the reason drip filters have persisted in disaster relief for decades.

Silver against contamination during idle periods

A gravity filter stands still most of the time – damp, at room temperature, in the dark. Those are ideal conditions for bacterial growth inside the filter body itself. Katadyn therefore binds silver firmly into the ceramic: it inhibits bacterial multiplication in the element and prevents the filter from becoming a source of contamination between fillings. Dry storage during longer breaks still matters: unscrew the elements, let them dry, store them dry.

What the element does not do

The 0.2 µm ceramic removes no viruses – they are an order of magnitude smaller – and no dissolved chemicals, heavy metals or salts either. To additionally reduce chlorine, lead or taste compounds, combine the ceramic in a double housing with a Carbodyn activated carbon element, or go straight for Gravidyn elements, which unite ceramic and an activated carbon core in one part.

Ceradyn, Gravidyn or Carbodyn – which element fits?

All three element types fit the same Katadyn housings but solve different tasks. Ceradyn is pure ceramic: maximum service life at up to 50'000 litres and around 100 cleanings, unbeatable cost per litre – the choice when microbiological safety and longevity matter. Gravidyn combines the same ceramic with an activated carbon core and additionally improves taste and chlorine levels, but must be replaced after six months at the latest. Carbodyn is a pure activated carbon element, combined with a ceramic in a double housing. Who is the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element for?

The replacement element is for anyone running a Katadyn drip filter or a Katadyn filter housing: mountain and club huts, camps, holiday homes, relief organisations – and households keeping their emergency supplies serviceable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Katadyn Ceradyn Ceramic Filter Element

Answers around the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element – from capacity and quantity to cleaning, silver and Swiss shipping.

How many Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter elements do I need?
A Katadyn drip filter runs three ceramic candles. This listing covers one element, so a complete set means ordering three. Single and double housings need correspondingly fewer.
How much water does one Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element filter?
Up to 50'000 litres or around 100 cleanings, depending on water quality. With three elements that gives a total capacity of up to 150'000 litres.
What does the Ceradyn element retain?
The 0.2 µm pore size retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, algae, suspended solids and rust particles. Viruses, dissolved chemicals and heavy metals are not removed.
How do I clean the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element?
Unscrew the element and brush the surface under running water with a soft brush. A wafer-thin layer comes off and fresh filter material is exposed. Clean at least monthly or as soon as flow drops. Soap and detergents are off limits.
How do I know the element needs replacing?
By the supplied gauge ring: if the element passes through it, minimum diameter has been undercut. Replace immediately as well if cracks are visible or after contact with frost – freezing water can burst the ceramic invisibly.
What is the silver impregnation for?
Silver bound firmly into the ceramic inhibits bacterial growth inside the filter element itself. That matters particularly with gravity filters, which stand damp and at room temperature between fillings – ideal conditions for organisms to multiply.
Does the Ceradyn element fit other Katadyn housings?
Yes, it is designed for Katadyn drip filters and for single and double housings in the Endurance series. In a double housing it can be combined with a Carbodyn activated carbon element to additionally reduce chlorine and taste compounds.
What is the difference between Ceradyn and Gravidyn?
Both use the same 0.2 µm silver-treated ceramic. Gravidyn additionally has an activated carbon core that reduces chlorine and taste compounds – but it must be replaced after six months at the latest. Ceradyn lasts considerably longer in return.
How do I store the element during longer periods out of use?
Unscrew it, let it dry completely and store it dry and frost-free. That prevents contamination and frost damage. Before the next use, flush the first litres through and discard them.
How fast does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element?
Orders placed before 17:00 usually ship the same working day. We send with Swiss Post, and delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 working days. Orders from CHF 100 ship free of charge.
Why buy the Katadyn Ceradyn ceramic filter element from Swiss-Sale.ch?
Swiss-Sale.ch is an official Swiss dealer for Katadyn. You get fast shipping from a Swiss warehouse (no customs, no waiting), personal advice on choosing the right element, and warranty handling directly in Switzerland.
What should I watch out for when handling the ceramic element?
Ceramic is impact sensitive – do not drop the element and transport it padded. Do not expose it to frost. And when fitting it, keep the raw and clean water sides apart: do not touch the element with raw-water hands after fitting, or you carry organisms behind the filter.
