Buy the Katadyn Gravidyn ceramic filter element – ceramic and carbon in one

The Katadyn Gravidyn ceramic filter element is the two-stage replacement candle for Katadyn drip filters and filter housings. On the outside sits the same microporous ceramic with a 0.2 µm pore size and embedded silver that distinguishes the Ceradyn – it retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and suspended solids. Inside the element there is additionally an activated carbon core that reduces chlorine, unpleasant taste compounds and organic chemicals. A single part therefore does what would otherwise require a double housing with two elements.

The carbon core sets the service life

Why the Gravidyn is replaced sooner than a pure ceramic element

The Gravidyn’s ceramic would last tens of thousands of litres just like the Ceradyn – the activated carbon core does not. Activated carbon works by adsorption: it binds chlorine and organic compounds until its internal surface is saturated. After that it filters nothing more, without you tasting or seeing the difference. That is precisely why Katadyn sets a fixed time limit for the Gravidyn: replace after six months at the latest, regardless of throughput – or sooner if the gauge ring shows the ceramic has reached minimum diameter. Exceed that limit and you still filter microbiologically safely, but you lose taste and chemical protection unnoticed.

📅 Fixed replacement date: after six months at the latest
📏 Replace sooner if the gauge ring shows minimum diameter
⚠️ Saturated activated carbon cannot be seen or tasted

Two stages, one part – and why that saves space

Anyone filtering with pure ceramic who still wants chlorine and taste compounds gone normally needs a double housing: ceramic element plus a separate activated carbon element. The Gravidyn nests both – ceramic as the outer filter layer, the activated carbon core inside. Water first passes the ceramic, is made microbiologically safe there, and then passes the carbon. For drip filters that means the same form, the same handling, but two filtering effects – without an extra housing and without conversion.

Cleaning yes – but it does not extend service life

The Gravidyn’s ceramic surface can be brushed just like the Ceradyn’s when flow drops. That restores throughput and is needed several times during the six months, particularly with turbid water. The distinction matters: brushing regenerates only the ceramic, not the activated carbon core. The carbon inside continues to saturate regardless. A neatly brushed element with good flow can therefore still do nothing for taste – hence the fixed replacement date.

Which water makes the Gravidyn worthwhile

With clear, untreated spring water the carbon core adds little – there the Ceradyn with its far longer service life is the more economical choice. The Gravidyn becomes worthwhile when treated tap water is filtered (chlorine taste), when raw water comes from standing water with an algal note, or when organic contamination is suspected. In households running the drip filter from the tap rather than a stream, it is usually the more suitable configuration.

Gravidyn or Ceradyn – taste versus service life

Both elements fit the same Katadyn housings and use the same 0.2 µm silver-treated ceramic. The difference is the core: the Gravidyn additionally holds activated carbon and thus improves taste, odour and chlorine levels – but must be replaced after six months at the latest. The Ceradyn does without the carbon and in return lasts up to 50'000 litres or around 100 cleanings. Rule of thumb: tap water and standing water argue for Gravidyn, clear springs and maximum economy for Ceradyn. Remember that a drip filter needs three elements. Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Katadyn Gravidyn Ceramic Filter Element

Answers around the Katadyn Gravidyn ceramic filter element – from the carbon core and replacement interval to quantity and Swiss shipping.

What is the difference between the Katadyn Gravidyn and the Ceradyn?
Both use the same 0.2 µm ceramic with embedded silver. The Gravidyn additionally has an activated carbon core inside that reduces chlorine, taste compounds and organic chemicals. In return it must be replaced after six months at the latest, whereas the Ceradyn manages up to 50'000 litres.
How many Gravidyn elements do I need?
A Katadyn drip filter runs three ceramic candles. This listing covers one element, so a complete set means ordering three.
Why must the Gravidyn be replaced after six months?
Because of the activated carbon core. Activated carbon binds contaminants until its internal surface is saturated – after that it no longer works, without you being able to see or taste it. Katadyn therefore sets a fixed time limit rather than a pure volume figure.
What happens if I use the element for longer than six months?
The ceramic still reliably filters bacteria, protozoa and suspended solids – microbiological safety therefore remains as long as the ceramic is undamaged. What is lost is the activated carbon effect: chlorine, taste and odour compounds are no longer reduced.
Can I clean the Gravidyn?
You can brush the ceramic surface just like the Ceradyn when flow drops – that restores throughput. The activated carbon core inside cannot be regenerated; it continues to saturate regardless of cleaning.
How much water does the Gravidyn filter per hour?
Around 4 litres per hour in gravity operation. With three elements in the drip filter a 10-litre container runs through in roughly two and a half hours.
Does the Gravidyn also remove viruses or heavy metals?
Not viruses – they are smaller than 0.2 µm and pass the ceramic. The activated carbon core mainly binds chlorine and organic compounds; do not rely on it for dissolved heavy metals. A Carbodyn element with documented lead reduction is the more suitable choice there.
Does the Gravidyn fit the same housings as the Ceradyn?
Yes. Both element types are designed for Katadyn drip filters and for single and double housings, and are interchangeable. You can therefore switch configuration according to water quality.
How do I know the ceramic has reached the end?
By the supplied gauge ring: if the element passes through it, minimum diameter has been undercut. With visible cracks or after contact with frost, replace the element immediately as well – regardless of the six-month interval.
How fast does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the Katadyn Gravidyn ceramic filter element?
Orders placed before 17:00 usually ship the same working day. We send with Swiss Post, and delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 working days. Orders from CHF 100 ship free of charge.
Why buy the Katadyn Gravidyn ceramic filter element from Swiss-Sale.ch?
Swiss-Sale.ch is an official Swiss dealer for Katadyn. You get fast shipping from a Swiss warehouse (no customs, no waiting), personal advice on choosing the right element, and warranty handling directly in Switzerland.
What should I watch out for when handling the Gravidyn?
Protect the ceramic from impact and do not expose it to frost. Note the installation date – because service life is limited by time rather than litres, it is otherwise hard to track. And store spare elements dry and away from odours, because activated carbon absorbs smells from its surroundings.
