Buy the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars – the highest magnification in the range

The KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars is one of the two new 50 mm models with which Kowa extends the BD III XD series upwards. They are built for observation in difficult light and deliver a noticeably brighter image at dawn and dusk than the 42 mm versions. Thanks to Kowa’s optical design they stay remarkably compact. The proven optical system of the series – XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass, KR protective coating and a magnesium chassis – carries over unchanged.

12x magnification · twilight factor 24.5

12x50 – the flagship for distance and low light

The 12x50 is the most powerful binocular in the BD III XD series: 12x magnification, 50 mm objectives and a twilight factor of 24.5 – the highest figure in the entire line-up. It makes observations possible where a 10x42 reaches its limit: chamois across a whole valley, waterfowl on the far shore, detail along a mountain ridge. At 12x, longer sessions benefit from support – handheld, the image is noticeably less steady than with an 8x.

XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass – decisive in low light

At dusk, when the eye is already at its limit, optical errors count double. Kowa’s XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass minimise dispersion and thereby preserve contrast and resolution exactly when both become scarce. Combined with the 50 mm objective, the image stays usable longer than on smaller binoculars – and it is often the last twenty minutes before dark that decide an observation.

50 mm light-gathering, 160 mm long – more compact than expected

Classic 50 mm binoculars have a reputation for being large and heavy. Kowa addresses that with an advanced optical design and a magnesium alloy chassis: 160 mm in length and roughly 725 to 730 g is restrained for this class. The binocular is operated via the large precision focus wheel, which also works with gloves – no minor detail on a winter stand. The soft silicone eyecups stay comfortable even after hours.

KR protective coating and a waterproof body

Objective and eyepiece lenses carry Kowa’s KR coating, which repels water, dust and dirt and makes cleaning after use easier. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so it will not fog internally when you move from a cold high seat into a warm vehicle. One point for accuracy: within the series the official ISO 14132-2 wide-angle certification applies only to the 32 mm and 42 mm models, not to the 50 mm versions.

When is a 50 mm binocular worth it?

A 50 mm binocular pays off if you regularly observe in low light – on a stand, at dawn by the water or watching game just before dark. Within the BD III XD series the 10x50 offers the larger exit pupil (5.0 mm), the 12x50 the higher magnification and the highest twilight factor (24.5). If you are mostly out in daylight and want to save weight, the 42 mm or 32 mm models serve you better. Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars

Answers to the common questions about the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars – from field of view and XD lenses to eyeglass compatibility, care and shipping within Switzerland.

What field of view does the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars have?
The KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars shows 101.3 m at 1'000 m, corresponding to a 5.8° angle of view. For accuracy: within the BD III XD series the official ISO 14132-2 wide-angle certification applies only to the 32 mm and 42 mm models. On the 50 mm versions the focus is on light-gathering and magnification.
What are XD lenses and what do they do?
XD stands for extra-low dispersion. Kowa makes these lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass, which refracts different wavelengths more evenly. As a result, high-contrast edges show almost no colour fringing – the image stays contrasty and the colours natural. The difference shows most clearly against the light, for instance when a dark bird sits against a bright sky.
What separates the BD III XD from the previous BD II XD series?
The optical system is unchanged – Kowa reworked the handling instead. New are soft silicone eyecups, an improved grip pattern, a redesigned focus wheel and a lighter chassis. The objective covers, rainguard and carrying case were revised as well. Add the two new 50 mm models and Kowa’s current design language.
What is the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars best suited for?
The KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars is particularly suited to: Long-range hunting, Mountain observation, Astronomy, Wildlife watching, Waterside observation, Dusk. That is what makes it the right tool – the highest magnification in the range.
Which model in the BD III XD series suits me?
The series comprises seven models differing in field of view, weight and light-gathering. The 6.5x32 has the widest field at 175.0 m, the 8x32 is the balanced standard, the 10x32 the lightest at 505 g. The 42 mm models gather more light: the 8x42 with a 5.3 mm exit pupil, the 10x42 with more detail at distance. The new 50 mm versions are the dusk specialists – the 10x50 with a larger exit pupil, the 12x50 with the highest twilight factor in the range.
Is the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars suitable for spectacle wearers?
Eye relief is 17.5 mm. You will reach virtually the full field of view even with corrective glasses. The soft silicone eyecups twist down for glasses wearers, bringing the eye closer to the eyepiece so the field of view is not clipped at the edges.
How close can the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars focus?
Close focus is 3.0 m. For a bright 50 mm binocular that is normal – these models focus on distance and low light rather than close range.
Is the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars waterproof, and what is the chassis made of?
Yes. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so it will not fog internally when you come from cold into warmth. The chassis is a magnesium alloy – lighter than aluminium and stiffer than plastic – with rubber armour over it. In addition, the KR coating on objective and eyepiece lenses repels water, dust and dirt.

What should I keep in mind when using the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars?
