KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars
101.3 m field of view · 730 g
When distance is the problem: 12x magnification on 50 mm objectives yields the highest twilight factor in the whole range – 24.5.
Buy the KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars – the highest magnification in the range
The KOWA BD III XD 12x50 Binoculars is one of the two new 50 mm models with which Kowa extends the BD III XD series upwards. They are built for observation in difficult light and deliver a noticeably brighter image at dawn and dusk than the 42 mm versions. Thanks to Kowa’s optical design they stay remarkably compact. The proven optical system of the series – XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass, KR protective coating and a magnesium chassis – carries over unchanged.
12x magnification · twilight factor 24.5
12x50 – the flagship for distance and low light
The 12x50 is the most powerful binocular in the BD III XD series: 12x magnification, 50 mm objectives and a twilight factor of 24.5 – the highest figure in the entire line-up. It makes observations possible where a 10x42 reaches its limit: chamois across a whole valley, waterfowl on the far shore, detail along a mountain ridge. At 12x, longer sessions benefit from support – handheld, the image is noticeably less steady than with an 8x.
XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass – decisive in low light
At dusk, when the eye is already at its limit, optical errors count double. Kowa’s XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass minimise dispersion and thereby preserve contrast and resolution exactly when both become scarce. Combined with the 50 mm objective, the image stays usable longer than on smaller binoculars – and it is often the last twenty minutes before dark that decide an observation.
50 mm light-gathering, 160 mm long – more compact than expected
Classic 50 mm binoculars have a reputation for being large and heavy. Kowa addresses that with an advanced optical design and a magnesium alloy chassis: 160 mm in length and roughly 725 to 730 g is restrained for this class. The binocular is operated via the large precision focus wheel, which also works with gloves – no minor detail on a winter stand. The soft silicone eyecups stay comfortable even after hours.
KR protective coating and a waterproof body
Objective and eyepiece lenses carry Kowa’s KR coating, which repels water, dust and dirt and makes cleaning after use easier. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so it will not fog internally when you move from a cold high seat into a warm vehicle. One point for accuracy: within the series the official ISO 14132-2 wide-angle certification applies only to the 32 mm and 42 mm models, not to the 50 mm versions.

When is a 50 mm binocular worth it?
A 50 mm binocular pays off if you regularly observe in low light – on a stand, at dawn by the water or watching game just before dark. Within the BD III XD series the 10x50 offers the larger exit pupil (5.0 mm), the 12x50 the higher magnification and the highest twilight factor (24.5). If you are mostly out in daylight and want to save weight, the 42 mm or 32 mm models serve you better.
