The KOWA BD III XD 8x32 Binoculars belongs to Kowa’s new BD III XD series – successor to the BD II XD, which established itself as one of the strongest performers in the mid-price segment. Kowa kept the proven optical system and instead reworked the handling throughout: new silicone eyecups, an improved grip pattern, a redesigned focus wheel and a lighter chassis. In the 32 mm format that yields a compact binocular 114 mm long, officially certified as wide angle to ISO 14132-2.
8.8° · certified wide angle per ISO 14132-2
8x32 with a wide angle – the format most observers come back to
The 8x32 has been considered the most balanced binocular format for decades: enough magnification for confident identification, enough stability for handheld use, enough light for a full day. The BD III XD adds a field of view of 8.8°, or 153.9 m at 1'000 m – officially certified as wide angle to ISO 14132-2. Together with a close focus of just 1.3 m, this single binocular covers everything from a butterfly at your feet to a raptor across the valley.
XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass – colour fringing that never appears
In high contrast – a dark bird against bright sky, a ridge against the sun – simple binoculars show coloured fringes along the edges. This chromatic aberration occurs because different wavelengths refract by different amounts. Kowa counters it with XD lenses made from fluorite-rich ED glass, which minimise exactly that dispersion. The result is clean edges, high contrast and natural colour rendition – decisive when a plumage has to be identified correctly.
Magnesium chassis and reworked handling – where the third generation gains
The chassis is a magnesium alloy: lighter than aluminium, yet stiffer and more stable than plastic. Over it sits rubber armour with a new grip pattern that holds even in wet hands. The large precision focus wheel can be operated with gloves and turns smoothly rather than in steps. The soft silicone eyecups are new too and sit noticeably more comfortably during long sessions than hard plastic cups.
KR protective coating and a waterproof body – built for alpine weather
Objective and eyepiece lenses carry Kowa’s KR coating: water beads off, dust and fingerprints adhere less and wipe away in one pass. In the field that saves exactly the minutes in which the subject would otherwise disappear. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so it will not fog internally when you move from cold into warmth. Accessories such as the objective covers, rainguard and carrying case were also revised for the third generation.

Which BD III XD suits you? The seven models compared
Choosing binoculars in Switzerland within the BD III XD series comes down mainly to field of view, weight and light-gathering. The 32 mm models are the compact all-rounders: the 6.5x32 with the widest field in the range (175.0 m), the 8x32 as the balanced standard and the 10x32 as the lightest model at 505 g. The 42 mm versions gather more light and suit dusk and woodland; the new 50 mm models are the low-light specialists.
