Lantern Function

Flashlights with Lantern Function
From rod light to standing light in seconds

A flashlight with lantern function can be transformed from directed rod light into a 360° lamp – via extendable diffuser, removable diffusion cap or integrated side LEDs. Practical for camping, basecamp and power outages where directed spot does not help.

Why a flashlight with lantern function?
  • 360° illumination instead of directed spot
  • Ideal for camping, tent lighting, picnic
  • Power outage lighting at home
  • Magnetic base or hanging eye for stationary use
  • More compact than separate camping lantern

Which designs of lantern function exist?

Several construction principles are common. Extendable diffuser – a milky plastic cylinder is pulled out of the lamp head and scatters the LED light all around. Advantages: compact, integrated. Disadvantages: light losses through diffusion. Removable diffusion cap – an attachment is placed on the front of the lamp head. Variable but easy to lose. Integrated side LEDs – separate LEDs along the housing provide 360° light without mechanical adjustment. Premium solution with high light output.

Which applications fit?

Different use cases benefit from the dual purpose:

  • Camping and trekking – tent interior, base camp lighting at table
  • Power outage preparation – emergency light in living room
  • Car and breakdown set – engine bay inspection plus emergency lighting
  • Garden and garage – movable 360° illumination
  • Boats and caravans – interior lighting with spot reserve

What to look for when buying?

Most important: light output in lantern mode. Through diffusion typically 20-40 % of light is lost compared to spot mode. A lamp with 1'000 lumens delivers around 600-800 lumens distributed 360° in lantern mode – enough for tent or small room, not for large areas. Check stand function: a flat base or magnetic foot is mandatory, otherwise the lamp rolls away. A hanging eye allows attachment to tent ceiling – very practical. Watch battery consumption: lantern mode often runs at reduced brightness, which massively extends runtime (5-10 hours instead of 1-2 hours at spot maximum).

Frequently asked questions about lantern function

Lantern flashlight or separate camping lantern?

For users with clear camping focus a dedicated camping lantern is superior (more 360° light, often larger battery, diffuser-optimised). For mixed use with occasional camping the dual function is more practical and saves weight.

How much light does a camping tent need?

For a 2-3 person tent 100-200 lumens in lantern mode is enough – more dazzles in confined space. For large family tents or vestibules 300-500 lumens makes sense.

Do lantern lamps work in the cold?

Like all lithium battery lamps they lose capacity at low temperatures. At -10 °C and below expect about 50-70 % remaining capacity. Inside the tent temperatures are usually moderate – less of an issue than outdoor storage.

Can the lantern function be used without spot mode?

Yes, in most models the modes are independent. In lantern mode pure 360° illumination, in rod mode spot without diffuser. Switching typically via mode switch, attachment or rotating mechanism.
