UV Light

UV Flashlights
Make visible what stays invisible

A UV flashlight emits ultraviolet light (typically 365 or 395 nm) that makes fluorescent substances visible. Used to detect hygiene traces, animal urine, counterfeit money, minerals, leaks, wound inspection and forensics – a specialist tool for areas where normal light fails.

What is a UV flashlight used for?
  • Hygiene inspection (hotel rooms, kitchens, bathrooms)
  • Detection of animal urine (cats, dogs, pests)
  • Counterfeit money inspection (security marks on banknotes)
  • Mineral and gemstone identification
  • Leak detection in HVAC and refrigeration with UV markers

Which wavelength is needed for what?

UV light is divided into ranges: UV-A (315-400 nm) is long-wave and used in most UV flashlights – mainly 365 nm and 395 nm. 365 nm offers stronger fluorescence, more efficient activation of glowing substances and less visible side light – ideal for forensics and mineralogy. 395 nm is cheaper and sufficient for most everyday applications (counterfeit money, animal urine, hygiene). Short-wave UV-B or UV-C is unusual in flashlights – harmful to skin and eyes, reserved for specialised devices.

Which applications differ?

Different requirements depending on use:

  • Hygiene inspection – 365 nm preferred, medium output (3-10 W)
  • Animal urine search – 395 nm sufficient, higher output for large areas
  • Counterfeit money – 365 or 395 nm, low output enough
  • Mineralogy – 365 nm mandatory, with high purity (filter)
  • Forensics / trace search – 365 nm, higher output

What to look for when buying?

Most important: wavelength must match the application. For professional inspection 365 nm is mandatory, for hobby use 395 nm suffices. Pay attention to a UV filter (Wood's filter) – without filter the UV LED also emits in the visible purple range, which masks fluorescence. Check power in mW or W (not lumens, that is misleading for UV – UV light is dark to the eye). UV protective glasses for prolonged use are advisable. Some models combine UV and white-light LED in one housing – practical, but usually with compromises in UV purity.

  • ✓ Cleaning companies and hotel staff (hygiene inspection)
  • ✓ Pet owners (urine search, pest detection)
  • ✓ Banks, cashiers and retail (counterfeit money inspection)
  • ✓ Mineral collectors and geologists
  • ✓ HVAC technicians (leak detection with UV markers)

Frequently asked questions about UV flashlights

365 nm or 395 nm – which is better?

365 nm activates fluorescence more strongly and cleanly (less visible side light). For professional applications 365 nm is standard but costs more. 395 nm is cheaper, sufficient for everyday use, but side light interferes with subtle traces.

Is UV light from a flashlight dangerous?

UV-A (the spectrum used in flashlights) is less harmful than UV-B or UV-C with brief direct view, but prolonged exposure can lead to eye irritation. Avoid looking directly at the beam, UV protective glasses for intensive use are sensible.

Does UV light work in daylight?

In bright daylight fluorescence is barely visible because visible sunlight overwhelms the weak glow. For serious UV inspection darken the room (curtains closed, room lights off) – then traces are clearly visible.

Which LED power do I need?

For hobby use (counterfeit money, scorpions, minerals) 1-3 W is enough. For professional inspection (hygiene, forensics, leak detection) 5-10 W with high-quality filter LED is standard.
