Buy carving tools: from your first spoon to a relief

Carving tools decide whether your first project succeeds: a sharp carving knife shapes the outline, a hook knife hollows out spoons and kuksas, gouges work out hollows, grooves and reliefs. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find these tools individually and in sets – for beginners, families and experienced woodcarvers.

The focus is on BeaverCraft from Ukraine with carving knives, hook knives, chisels, sets and accessories. They are joined by the Swedish classics from Morakniv, lime wood for practice and cut protection from Nitras. This buying guide shows you which carving tools you need for which project and how to use and care for them safely.

Which carving tools do you need?

Carving knives – the basic tool

With a straight carving knife you carve outlines, surfaces and details. To start, a general-purpose knife with a short blade is enough; slim detail knives later work out faces, feathers and notches. The Morakniv wood carving knives have a 2.5 mm thick carbon steel blade at 58.5 HRC: the Morakniv 106 (C) with an 85 mm blade for powerful cuts, the 120 (C) with 62 mm for fine work. You will find all single knives under carving knives.

Hook knives and spoon knives

For spoons, kuksas and bowls you also need a hook knife with a curved blade. The BeaverCraft SK1 has a blade radius of 2.5 cm and weighs 45 g. The SK series is also available with a wider radius, with a long blade and in left-handed versions. Morakniv offers double-edged hook knives with the 162 and 163.

Gouges and chisels

Gouges remove material in hollows, grooves and reliefs. BeaverCraft offers straight and bent gouges, flat chisels and V-tools in compact, palm-size and long versions – such as the G7L/20 with a 130 mm long bent blade for bowls. The BeaverCraft SC01 combines four compact chisels (round gouges #5, #8 and #9 plus V-tool #12) with a leather strop and polishing compound. You will find the full range under wood carving chisels.

Carving sets – the right blades in one box

A set bundles the blades that belong together for a project. The BeaverCraft S01 contains the C1 carving knife and a hook knife for your first spoon, plus a leather strop and polishing compound. The BeaverCraft S12 brings three carving knives for figures and general carving. For spoons, kuksas and bowls, the BeaverCraft S43 has four tools, a leather strop and polishing compound. All sets at a glance: carving knife sets and carving kits with wood and instructions.

Drawknife, hatchet and adze

For larger workpieces and green wood, coarser carving tools come into play: with a hatchet and an adze you split blanks and rough out large bowls, with a drawknife you peel bark and shape long surfaces. BeaverCraft offers the AX1 hatchet, the AX2 adze and the AX3 splitting hatchet, plus drawknives with handles in ash, oak or walnut. Then there is the Morakniv 220 drawknife with a 114 mm stainless steel blade. More under carving axe & adze.

Carving tools for beginners, advanced carvers and kids

Beginners

The easiest start is a figure kit: the BeaverCraft Comfort Bird contains a lime wood blank with a pre-drawn pattern, the C1 carving knife, illustrated instructions and a card with safety tips. If you would rather carve something useful, start with the S01 spoon set. Both routes need only one or two knives – more blades are worth it once you know what you like to carve most.

Advanced carvers

If you carve regularly, you need more blade shapes. The BeaverCraft S08 includes eight knives – sloyd, detail and hook knives with different diameters – with a tool roll, leather strop and polishing compound. The BeaverCraft S10 extends this to twelve knives, including chip carving and spoon carving knives, in a canvas tool roll. With the BeaverCraft S14, a long bent gouge joins the general-purpose and hook knife.

Kids and families

For children from age 8, always under supervision, there is the BeaverCraft Kids carving kit: a safety knife with a shorter blade and rounded tip, a cut-resistant glove, a pre-shaped blank and child-friendly instructions. The BeaverCraft C1Kid is a children's carving knife with a finger guard, rounded tip and leather sheath.

Which wood is good for carving?

For beginners, lime wood (basswood) is the first choice: soft, evenly grown and fine-grained, so the blade cuts cleanly in almost any direction. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find BeaverCraft lime wood blocks in packs of 5 to 18 and pre-shaped blanks for spoons, kuksas, an owl, a toucan and a cardinal – all under carving wood.

For spoons and kuksas, many woodcarvers also use fresh green wood such as birch: it is easier to work while moist and then dries slowly. Hardwoods such as walnut, cherry or oak are firmer and call for sharp carving tools and some experience.

Safety when carving: cut protection first

When carving, your holding hand is most at risk because it guides the workpiece close to the blade. A cut-resistant glove is therefore part of the kit from day one: the Nitras Taeki 6730 made of Taeki special yarn is certified to EN 388 and EN 407 and available in sizes 6 to 11. For thumbs and fingers working close to the blade during thumb-push cuts, self-adhesive cut protection tape adds protection. Work aprons and a leather bib protect thighs and chest – see carving protection.

  • Carve away from your body: never guide the blade towards your hand, leg or stomach.
  • Hold the workpiece securely: clamp larger pieces or use a carving horse, never brace them against your body.
  • Work sharp: a sharp blade needs less force and slips less often than a dull one.
  • Small shavings: many controlled cuts rather than a few big ones – and take a break when your concentration drops.

Caring for and sharpening your carving knives

Carbon steel, as used by BeaverCraft and the Morakniv models marked (C), gets very sharp and is easy to resharpen, but it rusts without care. Wipe the blade dry after carving, oil it lightly and store it in a sheath, case or tool roll – you will find suitable cases under carving knife cases. Wooden handles appreciate a little linseed oil now and then.

To keep the edge sharp, stropping on a leather strop is enough: apply polishing compound and pull the blade flat over it several times, spine first. The BeaverCraft LS7P03 combines a large leather strop with three polishing compounds in green, white and red; for hook knives there is a paddle strop. You only need a sharpening stone for nicks or a very dull edge. More under abrasives.

Carving tools as a gift

Carving tools make a gift that brings a new hobby and, in the end, a handmade piece. For beginners, the figure kits with instructions are a good fit – such as the BeaverCraft Santa carving kit for your own little Santa in lime wood, the Comfort Bird or the Dala horse. The Swiss cow «Linda» carving set contains a cow blank pre-made in Switzerland by the Stiftung Zukunft Thurgau, horns, leather ears, the Morakniv 120 carving knife and illustrated instructions.

For experienced carvers, sets in a case or roll are ideal: the BeaverCraft S13X Deluxe comes with walnut handles, a leather strop and polishing compound in a genuine leather case. For families, the DIY08 kids' kit is a lovely idea for carving together. Tip: add a cut-resistant glove in the right size to the set.

Our recommendation: To start, a figure kit or the S01 spoon set plus a cut-resistant glove. If you already carve, choose the S08 or S10, and the S43 for spoons and kuksas. As a gift for skilled carvers, the S13X Deluxe in its leather case is a great fit.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Carving Tools

Which carving tools do I need to get started?

To start, a carving knife, a cut-resistant glove and soft lime wood are enough. If you want to carve spoons or a kuksa, add a hook knife. A set that already contains the right blades and sharpening accessories is convenient, such as the BeaverCraft S01 or a figure kit with instructions.

Which carving set is suitable for beginners?

For figures, the BeaverCraft Comfort Bird, Santa or Dala Horse kits are a good choice: they contain a lime wood blank with a pre-drawn pattern, the C1 carving knife and illustrated instructions. For your first spoon there is the S01 with carving knife, hook knife, leather strop and polishing compound, and for general carving the S12 with three carving knives.

What is the difference between a carving knife and a hook knife?

A carving knife has a straight blade for outlines, surfaces and details. A hook knife has a curved blade and hollows out recesses, such as the bowl of a spoon or the inside of a kuksa. For spoons and bowls you therefore need both.

What do I need gouges for?

Gouges remove material in hollows, grooves and reliefs, while V-tools cut fine lines and notches. They complement the carving knife as soon as you carve bowls, reliefs or ornaments. The BeaverCraft SC01 contains four compact chisels together with a leather strop and polishing compound.

Which wood is good for carving?

Lime wood is soft, evenly grown and can be carved in almost any direction – ideal for beginners and figures. For spoons and kuksas, fresh green wood such as birch is often used. Hardwoods such as walnut or oak are firmer and better suited to experienced carvers.

What is a kuksa and what do I carve it with?

A kuksa is a traditional drinking cup from Scandinavia, originally carved from birch. You shape the outside with the carving knife and the hollow with the hook knife. The BeaverCraft S43 is made for spoons and kuksas, and matching lime wood kuksa blanks are available individually.

From what age can children carve?

The BeaverCraft DIY08 kids' carving kit is recommended from age 8 with adult supervision. It contains a safety knife with a shorter blade and rounded tip as well as a cut-resistant glove. The C1Kid children's carving knife also has a rounded tip and a finger guard.

Which cut protection makes sense for carving?

Most important is a cut-resistant glove for your holding hand, for example the Nitras Taeki 6730 to EN 388. Self-adhesive cut protection tape also protects thumbs and fingers. For larger workpieces and when using a drawknife, a work apron made of leather or canvas protects you.

How do I sharpen carving knives?

For regular care, pull the blade flat and spine first over a leather strop with polishing compound. For hook knives there is a paddle strop. You only need a sharpening stone if the edge has nicks or is very dull.

Are there carving tools for left-handers?

Yes. BeaverCraft offers hook knives for left-handers, such as the SK1L, SK4LS and SK5L, and with the S09L a carving knife set for left-handers. Straight carving knives and gouges can be used with either hand.

What is the difference between BeaverCraft and Morakniv?

BeaverCraft from Ukraine specialises in carving tools and offers carving knives, hook knives, gouges, drawknives, sets and accessories. Morakniv has been making knives in Sweden since 1891 and offers classic wood carving knives such as the 106 and 120, the 162 and 163 hook knives and the 220 drawknife.

Who takes care of the warranty?

Swiss-Sale.ch is the official Swiss dealer for BeaverCraft and Morakniv. You handle warranty cases directly with us – there is no need to contact the manufacturer abroad.
