Wood Carving – Creative, Relaxing, Traditional

Wood carving is a timeless craft that combines creativity and relaxation. In Switzerland, wood carving has tradition – from the carved Santa to the wooden cow from the Bernese Oberland, plus Nordic classics like the kuksa cup or the Dala horse. With the right tools the entry is effortless, and experienced carvers also find professional gear at Swiss-Sale.ch for ambitious projects. The focus of our range is BeaverCraft, the Ukrainian specialist for carving tools, complemented by Morakniv classics from Sweden and Nitras cut protection.

What do you want to carve? Use cases at a glance

The right tool depends on what you want to do. Here are the typical use cases and the matching set from our range:

Spoons and kitchen utensils

The classic entry into carving. You need two blades: a straight carving knife for outer contours and a hook knife to hollow out the bowl. BeaverCraft complete sets contain both blades plus a pre-shaped lime wood spoon blank – everything you need for your first wooden spoon. The BeaverCraft S01 is the bestselling beginner set, the S02 offers an alternative blade configuration, and the S43 combines spoon and kuksa carving in a premium set with three knives.

Kuksa – the Nordic wooden cup

The kuksa is the traditional Scandinavian wooden drinking cup, originally carved from birch burl knots and today appreciated by outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. We carry kuksa blanks made of lime wood – you hollow out the cavity with the hook knife and shape the outer form with the carving knife. The BeaverCraft S43 set combines spoon and kuksa carving.

Figure carving – from bird to bear

The BeaverCraft Comfort series is the ideal answer for beginners who want a quick visible result: each set contains a pre-shaped blank, the matching carving knife and a step-by-step guide. The pre-shaped contours give you confidence while you craft the details yourself. Popular motifs: Comfort Bird, Bear, Wizard, Santa, Dala horse. Each Comfort set comes packaged as a creative gift – a perfect weekend project.

Swiss and Nordic carving classics

If you want to connect with traditional motifs: for the classic carved Santa there’s the matching BeaverCraft Comfort set with pre-shaped blank and carving knife. For the typical Swiss cow we offer the Linda set with all the necessary material and a detailed guide. The traditionally Swedish Dala horse is also available as a Comfort set – a popular carving classic with long Nordic tradition. Carving these figures makes a satisfying weekend project with a clear result, ideal as a homemade gift.

Pro projects with comprehensive sets

Anyone who carves regularly and needs different blade shapes reaches for the comprehensive BeaverCraft sets. The S09 with 5 blade shapes for right-handers is the balanced choice for advanced carvers. The S13X Deluxe comes in an elegant leather case (see also our carving knife cases) and is also suitable as a premium gift. If you really want to cover all blade shapes, you’ll choose the S08 with 8 carving knives, leather strop and polishing compound – the most comprehensive pro set in the range. All three sets ship with all the accessories needed for edge care.

Beginners and children

For a first start we recommend the BeaverCraft S01 spoon carving set – everything included, manageable scope, clear project goal, and a tangible result after a few hours of work. If you’d rather carve a figure than a spoon, choose a matching Comfort set. For children from age eight (under supervision), the BeaverCraft C1Kid with safety cap and child-friendly grip is the right choice. Important for all beginners: cut-resistant gloves are essential.

Our recommendation: If you’ve never carved before, start with the BeaverCraft S01 spoon carving set plus cut-resistant gloves. If you want to carve figures, go for a Comfort set. If you carve regularly and need more blades, switch to the S09 or S08 set.

BeaverCraft & Morakniv – the brands in our range

BeaverCraft – Ukrainian carving tool specialists

BeaverCraft is the carving tool specialist. Each blade is made in Ukraine from European high-carbon steel (65G), heat-treated to 58–62 HRC and combined with ergonomic handles in walnut, oak or birch. Final assembly, edge work and quality control are done by hand. The brand covers the full spectrum: from single carving or hook knives to complete sets for spoons and kuksa, all the way to comprehensive pro sets with eight blade shapes. BeaverCraft offers Lifetime Warranty on material and workmanship defects.

Morakniv – Swedish carving knife tradition

Morakniv from Sweden has been known for over 130 years for robust outdoor and carving knives at fair prices. The Morakniv Woodcarving 106C and the Morakniv Woodcarving 120C are classic beginner carving knives with a straight blade and wooden handle. A low-maintenance alternative to BeaverCraft, often preferred as a second knife in the kit.

Safety When Carving

Carving knives are sharp tools with a high injury risk – precisely because the blade works close to your fingers. Five safety rules:

  • Wear cut-resistant gloves: The Nitras Taeki 6730 reliably protects the off-hand from cuts and stab injuries. For smaller projects, also wrap cut protection tape around the critical fingers. More in the filter category Cut Protection.
  • Carve away from the body: Always carve away from your body, never toward your own hand or leg. With thumb-pressure cuts, support the thumb on the workpiece, not in the cutting direction.
  • Fix the workpiece: For larger projects use a clamp or carving bench. Never support the workpiece against your unprotected body with your bare hand.
  • Sharp blades are safer: Dull knives slip more easily and cause more injuries. Sharpen your blades regularly with leather strop and polishing compound (stropping).
  • Controlled cuts: Make small controlled shavings rather than big chops. This protects blade, workpiece and hand. Take a break as soon as concentration wanes.

Maintenance and Care of Your Carving Knives

High-carbon steel like BeaverCraft uses is sharp and durable – but rust-prone. Three care rules:

  • Sharpen with stropping: Use the included leather strop with polishing compound. Pull the blade flat across the strop – a few passes are enough to restore sharpness. No sharpening stone needed for normal care. Leather strops, polishing compound and sharpening stones are in the filter category Abrasives.
  • Store dry: After each use, dry the blade and apply a light film of blade-care oil. Store in the protective sleeve or leather case.
  • Care for the wooden handle: Rub the natural wood handle with linseed oil every few months – this prevents drying out and cracking. Never submerge the handle in water.

FAQ – Common Questions About Carving

Which carving set is suitable for beginners?

The BeaverCraft S01 spoon carving set is our beginner tip: it contains two knives (carving knife and hook knife), a pre-shaped lime wood spoon blank and instructions. You get a clear project goal and everything included. Alternatively, a figure carving set like the Comfort Bird – with pre-shaped bird blank and just one carving knife. Important addition: cut-resistant gloves.

Which wood is suitable for carving?

Lime wood (also known as basswood or linden) is the most popular carving wood worldwide. It’s soft, can be carved in any direction without splintering, has even grain and a neutral colour. Our BeaverCraft lime wood blocks come in 5, 10, 12, 16 or 18 pieces per pack. Alternatives are birch (slightly harder, beautiful grain) and walnut (for experienced carvers who like darker wood). Freshly cut wood is easier to carve than dry wood – but the workpiece must dry afterwards.

What is a kuksa and how is it carved?

A kuksa is a traditional Scandinavian wooden drinking cup, originally carved from birch burl knots and popular among outdoor enthusiasts worldwide. We offer kuksa blanks made of lime wood – you hollow the cavity with the hook knife, shape the outside with the carving knife. The BeaverCraft S43 set contains spoon and kuksa blanks plus three matching knives. After carving, the kuksa is traditionally boiled in salt water and sealed with linseed oil.

Which sets are available for typical Swiss motifs?

For typical Swiss and Nordic carving motifs you’ll find in the range, among others, the wood carving set Swiss cow Linda, the Comfort Santa variant for the wooden Saint Nicholas, and the traditionally Swedish Dala horse. These sets contain the pre-shaped wooden blank, the matching carving knife and a step-by-step guide – everything included for a weekend project with a clear result. Popular as a homemade gift or as an entry into figure carving.

What is the difference between BeaverCraft and Morakniv?

BeaverCraft specialises in carving tools and offers the full spectrum from single blades to 8-piece pro sets – all blades made of European high-carbon steel with ergonomic wooden handles in walnut, oak or birch. Morakniv is a Swedish heritage brand that, alongside outdoor knives, also makes carving knives – the 106C and 120C are classic carving knives with a straight blade. Rule of thumb: anyone starting out or wanting sets chooses BeaverCraft. Anyone looking for a single classic carving knife is well served with Morakniv.

What is the difference between a carving knife and a hook knife?

A carving knife has a straight blade and is suited for outer contours, surfaces and fine details. A hook knife has a curved, semicircular blade and is used specifically to hollow out hollows – for spoon interiors or kuksa bowls. Most spoon and kuksa sets contain both knives, since you need both for these projects.

From what age can children carve?

With the BeaverCraft C1Kid children’s carving knife, children from about age eight can carve under supervision. The knife has a child-friendly shape and a safety cap. Important: cut-resistant gloves (Nitras Taeki 6730) and an adult companion are mandatory. A good first project for children is a simple lime wood block with soft contours, later a pre-shaped Comfort blank for bird or bear.

How do I sharpen my carving knives?

For normal care, stropping is enough: pull the blade flat across a leather strop with polishing compound – a few passes are enough to restore sharpness. The leather strop with P01 polishing compound from BeaverCraft is perfect for this. Only when the blade is actually damaged or very dull do you need a sharpening stone. Advantage of high-carbon steel: it can be very well resharpened and holds the edge for a long time.

Which cut-resistant gloves are useful for carving?

We recommend the Nitras Taeki 6730: TAEKI special-fibre gloves with high cut protection class, good mobility, suitable for all carving work. For very small detail work where gloves get in the way, you can additionally or alternatively wrap self-adhesive cut protection tape (5 cm x 4.5 m) around the critical fingers. The off-hand (left hand for right-handers) should always be protected since it holds the workpiece.

How do I care for my carving knife blades?

The high-carbon steel blades (BeaverCraft) are rust-prone. Three care rules: First, after each use wipe dry and apply a light film of blade-care oil. Second, store in the protective sleeve or leather case, don’t leave loose. Third, rub the wooden handle with linseed oil every few months – this prevents drying out and cracking. With proper care, BeaverCraft carving knives last for decades.

What does the BeaverCraft Lifetime Warranty cover?

BeaverCraft offers Lifetime Warranty on material and workmanship defects – excluded are normal wear, improper use and modifications. In Switzerland we handle the statutory two-year warranty period directly for you – beyond that, the BeaverCraft manufacturer warranty applies, and we’re happy to assist with the handling.

Which set for carving with larger blades (carving axe, adze)?

For rough preliminary work on larger workpieces – such as setting up spoon hollows or hollowing a kuksa – you need a carving axe or an adze (curved axe). You’ll find these tools in the filter category Carving Axe & Adze. For pure hand work, the blades from the carving knife sets are sufficient.
