Katadyn Explorer Activated Carbon Refill Pack
2 cartridges, up to 500 litres each
Safe water nobody wants to drink? The activated carbon stage takes out chlorine, mustiness and odours – here as a twin pack for up to 1'000 litres.
Buy the Katadyn Explorer activated carbon refill pack – renew the taste stage
The Katadyn Explorer activated carbon refill pack holds two replacement cartridges for the activated carbon stage of the Katadyn Explorer and Explorer Pro. While the ceramic provides microbiological safety, the activated carbon handles everything you can taste and smell: chlorine from treated tap water, musty flavours from standing water, odours and turbidity. Each cartridge filters up to 500 litres depending on water quality, so the twin pack covers up to 1'000 litres.
Chlorine · odour · turbidity · up to 500 L per cartridge
Why taste is not a side issue
A water filter only helps as far as the water actually gets drunk. Water that is microbiologically sound but tastes of chlorine, algae or mud is noticeably under-consumed on tour – and under exertion dehydration becomes a problem far faster than diarrhoea. That is exactly where activated carbon comes in: it binds chlorine from treated tap water along with organic taste and odour compounds, and reduces turbidity. Microbiological safety still comes from the ceramic – the carbon makes sure the result is actually consumed.
Why 500 litres – and why that is enough
Activated carbon works by adsorption: contaminants attach to the huge internal surface of the carbon until it is saturated. After that the cartridge no longer removes anything, without you tasting the difference – which is why the volume figure matters more than the visual state. For two people, 500 litres corresponds to roughly two to three weeks of continuous use. Because the carbon is only consumed when water flows through it, modular use makes it last considerably longer: use it only for tap water or turbid water and it will see you through a whole season.
Fit it only when it is needed
The activated carbon stage is a module, not a mandatory component. With clear spring water in the high mountains it contributes little in taste terms – leave it out, save weight and raise the flow rate, because one less element is being flowed through. With treated tap water, standing water or water with an algal note it plays to its strengths. This freedom of choice is also why a twin pack makes sense: one cartridge stays in the filter, the second travels as reserve.
Changed in seconds
Replacement needs no tools: open the filter, remove the spent cartridge, insert the new one, close it. Then flush about half a litre through and discard it so loose carbon dust is carried out – otherwise the water can look slightly grey at first. The spent cartridge goes in general waste.

Carbon, ceramic or virus membrane – what is due?
The activated carbon is the shortest-lived of the three Explorer wear parts and therefore the most frequently reordered – hence the twin pack. At around 500 litres per cartridge it sits well below the ceramic (up to 20'000 litres, brushable in between) and the Explorer Pro virus membrane (up to 10'000 litres). Worth knowing: only the ceramic and the virus membrane concern safety. The activated carbon is a comfort stage – skip replacing it and you still filter safely, but the chlorine or musty taste stays. Who is the Katadyn Explorer activated carbon refill pack for?
The refill pack is for every owner of a Katadyn Explorer or Explorer Pro who often filters from mains supplies, standing water or turbid sources – and for anyone wanting a reserve on long trips.
