Katadyn Explorer Pro Filter
ceramic, carbon and virus membrane
Unclear water source, real virus risk? Three filter stages in one device – ceramic against bacteria, carbon against taste, a 0.01 µm membrane against viruses.
Buy the Katadyn Explorer Pro water purifier – protection down to viruses
The Katadyn Explorer Pro Filter is a pump water purifier with three-stage filtration for trekking, long-distance travel, expeditions and emergency preparedness. A ceramic cartridge with a 0.2 µm pore size retains bacteria, protozoa and microplastics, an activated carbon stage improves taste and odour and reduces chlorine, and a 0.01 µm hollow fibre membrane filters viruses. One device therefore covers the entire microbiological spectrum – precisely where two systems would otherwise be needed. It weighs 630 g and is developed and manufactured in Switzerland.
Virus membrane · MS2 tested · modular
Why viruses need a filter stage of their own
Bacteria measure 0.2 to 5 µm and protozoa such as Giardia are larger still – both are reliably caught by 0.2 µm ceramic. Viruses, at 0.02 to 0.3 µm, are an order of magnitude smaller and pass through any pure ceramic filter. That is exactly why Katadyn places a 0.01 µm hollow fibre membrane behind the ceramic in the Explorer Pro: it retains viruses too, at 99.99 % in testing with the MS2 model virus. In central Europe that is usually reserve capacity – in regions with untreated sewage, after flooding, or with surface water in densely populated areas it becomes a genuine safety gain.
Modular rather than over-specified – three stages you use individually
What sets the Explorer Pro apart is not only the virus stage but that you can leave it out. On an Alpine tour with clear mountain streams the ceramic is enough – membrane and carbon stay at home, the device gets lighter and the flow rate rises. On long-distance travel with questionable tap water you run all three stages. And if only the chlorine taste bothers you, water simply passes through ceramic and carbon. This split has a second advantage: each stage has its own service life and is replaced individually – carbon after around 500 litres, the membrane after up to 10'000 litres, the ceramic after up to 20'000 litres.
Ceramic you clean instead of discard
The first stage is a Katadyn ceramic cartridge with a 0.2 µm pore size. When it loads up with suspended solids, you brush the surface and expose fresh filter material – in the field, without tools or spare parts. That is exactly what separates ceramic from disposable hollow fibre cartridges, which clog quickly in turbid water. Because the ceramic may also be stored dry, the device survives long spells in a cupboard without organisms multiplying inside a damp filter.
Built for continuous use
The pump piston is metal rather than plastic – that is the part which wears first on pump filters, because it transmits force on every stroke. At up to one litre per minute a one-litre bottle fills in about a minute. The intake hose carries a prefilter with a float: the float keeps the intake just below the surface, where the water is cleanest, instead of drawing sediment off the bottom. That spares the ceramic and lengthens the intervals between cleanings.
What the filter does not do
Even a three-stage filter is not a cure-all. Dissolved heavy metals, nitrate, pesticides and salt are not removed – the activated carbon reduces chlorine and organic taste compounds but does not replace reverse osmosis. Salt water cannot be made drinkable with it. For natural freshwater sources, tap water of questionable quality and emergencies following supply interruptions, however, the Explorer Pro is sized exactly right.

Explorer Pro or Explorer – do you need the virus stage?
Within the Explorer series the decision comes down to virus risk. For tours in the Alps, Scandinavia and North America the Katadyn Explorer Filter with ceramic and activated carbon is enough – bacteria and protozoa are the relevant pathogens there. As soon as travel to South-East Asia, Africa, South America or flood-affected areas is on the plan, the Explorer Pro is the safe choice. If you want to start smaller, buy the Explorer and retrofit later with the Explorer Pro Upgrade Kit – same base, same replacement elements. Who is the Katadyn Explorer Pro Filter for?
The Explorer Pro suits anyone treating water where the source cannot be judged: long-distance travellers, expedition teams, trekkers in densely populated regions, relief and emergency personnel – and everyone preparing for a failure of the drinking water supply at home.
