Buy the Katadyn Explorer water filter – ceramic that renews instead of clogging

The Katadyn Explorer Filter is a pump water filter with two-stage filtration for trekking, camping, bikepacking and travel. The first stage is a ceramic cartridge with a 0.2 µm pore size that retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and microplastics. The second stage of replaceable activated carbon handles what you can taste: chlorine, musty flavours, odours and turbidity. At 480 g and up to a litre per minute the filter suits one to four people – and can later be upgraded to the Explorer Pro with virus protection.

0.2 µm · brush-cleanable · storable dry

Why cleanable ceramic beats a disposable cartridge

Hollow fibre cartridges filter superbly as long as the water is clear. As soon as suspended solids appear – glacial flour, a churned-up stream, turbidity after rain – they clog and cannot genuinely be regenerated. The Katadyn ceramic in the Explorer takes the opposite route: it is a depth filter whose surface you can brush. After cleaning, fresh filter material is exposed and flow is back to day one – for up to 20'000 litres. Then there is a practical advantage that often gets overlooked: the ceramic may be stored dry. No damp filter quietly growing organisms in a cupboard for months.

🧽 Brush the surface – flow rate restored
♾️ Up to 20'000 litres instead of a handful of cartridges
🌵 Storable dry – no contamination between trips

Two stages, two jobs

The ceramic handles safety, the activated carbon handles acceptance. That is not a gimmick: water that is microbiologically sound but tastes of chlorine, algae or mud simply does not get drunk enough – a real problem on tour, where dehydration becomes an issue faster than diarrhoea. The carbon stage reduces exactly those taste and odour compounds plus chlorine from treated tap water. It lasts around 500 litres and is then replaced while the ceramic carries on. If you do not need it, leave it out and save weight.

Built for mileage, not for one season

The pump piston is metal – precisely the component that transmits force on every stroke and is first to develop play or break on cheaper filters. The intake hose carries a prefilter with a float that keeps the opening just below the surface rather than in sediment. Together that means less wear, longer cleaning intervals and a filter that does not become a liability on a six-month trip.

Explorer today, Explorer Pro tomorrow

The Explorer and Explorer Pro share the same base. If you currently travel mainly in the Alps, Scandinavia or North America you need no virus protection – bacteria and protozoa are the relevant pathogens there. If a trip to South-East Asia, Africa or South America comes up later, you retrofit the virus stage with the Explorer Pro Upgrade Kit instead of buying a whole new device. The replacement elements are identical too, which simplifies spares.

What the filter cannot do

Viruses pass through 0.2 µm ceramic – that is what the Explorer Pro membrane is for. The filter likewise removes no dissolved heavy metals, nitrate, pesticides or salt. For clear to slightly turbid freshwater sources, tap water of unclear quality and household preparedness it is sized exactly right – covering what actually occurs on European and North American trips.

Explorer, Explorer Pro or Drip Filter – which Katadyn fits?

Start by choosing the form factor. The Katadyn Explorer is the pump filter for the move: 480 g, one litre per minute, ideal for trekking, bikepacking and camping with one to four people. If virus protection is the priority – long-distance travel, densely populated catchments, flooding – the Explorer Pro is the consistent choice, or you retrofit the Explorer later with the upgrade kit. If instead you need large volumes for a hut, camp or emergency supplies, the Drip Filter Ceradyn works in the background without pumping. Buy the Katadyn Explorer water filter at Swiss-Sale.ch – your Swiss specialist shop for outdoor gear with fast shipping.

Who is the Katadyn Explorer Filter for?

The Explorer suits anyone drinking from natural sources on the move: trekkers and thru-hikers, bikepackers, canoeists, campers, hunting and fishing parties – and everyone looking for a rugged, cleanable filter for emergency kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – Katadyn Explorer Filter

Answers around the Katadyn Explorer Filter – from ceramic cleaning and service life to the Pro upgrade and Swiss shipping.

What does the Katadyn Explorer Filter remove from water?
The ceramic cartridge with a 0.2 µm pore size retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, microplastics and suspended solids. The downstream activated carbon reduces chlorine, taste and odour compounds, and turbidity.
Does the Katadyn Explorer Filter remove viruses too?
No. Viruses are smaller than 0.2 µm and pass through the ceramic. If you need virus protection, choose the Katadyn Explorer Pro Filter or retrofit the Explorer with the Explorer Pro Upgrade Kit, which adds a 0.01 µm hollow fibre membrane.
How long do the elements of the Katadyn Explorer Filter last?
The ceramic cartridge filters up to 20'000 litres and the activated carbon cartridge up to 500 litres, depending on water quality. Both elements are available separately as spare parts, the carbon also as a twin pack.
How do I clean the ceramic cartridge of the Katadyn Explorer Filter?
When pumping resistance rises, take the cartridge out and brush its surface with the supplied sponge under clean water. A wafer-thin layer comes off and fresh filter material is exposed. Soap and detergents are off limits.
How fast does the Katadyn Explorer Filter work?
Up to 1 litre per minute, so a one-litre bottle fills in about a minute. With turbid water output drops faster – letting the water settle first or coarsely pre-filtering it through a cloth helps noticeably.
Can I run the Katadyn Explorer Filter without the carbon stage?
Yes. The design is modular. If taste and chlorine are not an issue, leave the activated carbon out and save weight. The ceramic stage always stays in use because it provides the microbiological safety.
Can the Katadyn Explorer Filter be upgraded to the Explorer Pro?
Yes. The Explorer Pro Upgrade Kit adds the virus filter stage including housing. The two-stage Explorer becomes a three-stage system with ceramic, activated carbon and virus membrane – without buying a new device.
May I store the Katadyn Explorer Filter dry?
Yes, and it is actually recommended. Flush the filter after use, let all parts dry fully and store them dry. Unlike hollow fibre systems, which must stay damp, Katadyn ceramic tolerates dry storage without issue – and that prevents organisms growing inside the element.
What happens if the Katadyn Explorer Filter freezes?
Freezing water can burst the ceramic from the inside without any visible crack. Such a filter must not be used further, because unfiltered water can pass through. Store the filter frost-free and do not leave it in a vehicle over winter.
How many people does the Katadyn Explorer Filter serve?
At up to one litre per minute it comfortably covers one to four people. For larger groups, camps or huts a gravity filter such as the Katadyn Drip Filter Ceradyn is the more efficient solution, because it works in the background without pumping.
How fast does Swiss-Sale.ch ship the Katadyn Explorer Filter?
Orders placed before 17:00 usually ship the same working day. We send with Swiss Post, and delivery within Switzerland takes 1–2 working days. Orders from CHF 100 ship free of charge.
Why buy the Katadyn Explorer Filter from Swiss-Sale.ch?
Swiss-Sale.ch is an official Swiss dealer for Katadyn. You get fast shipping from a Swiss warehouse (no customs, no waiting), personal advice on the right filter variant, and warranty handling directly in Switzerland.
What should I watch out for when using the Katadyn Explorer Filter?
Keep the intake and outlet hoses apart and never let the outlet hose hang in raw water – that is the most common way filtered water gets contaminated again. Use the float on the prefilter so you do not draw sediment off the bottom. And before longer trips, check whether the remaining element capacity is sufficient.
