The Katadyn Explorer ceramic replacement element is the spare cartridge for the first and most important filter stage of the Katadyn Explorer and Explorer Pro. Its microporous ceramic with a 0.2 µm pore size retains bacteria, protozoa such as Giardia and Cryptosporidium, microplastics and suspended solids, filtering up to 20'000 litres depending on water quality. Because the ceramic can be brushed clean and thus regenerated in service, it does not fail through clogging but only once repeated cleaning has taken it down to minimum thickness.

When the ceramic needs replacing – and when it just needs a brush
Falling flow almost always means a loaded surface, not end of life: brushing restores performance. You need a replacement element in three cases. First, when repeated cleaning has taken the ceramic to minimum thickness. Second, when a crack is visible – unfiltered water then passes through and the filter must not be used further. Third, after frost: freezing water can burst the ceramic from the inside with nothing visible outside. On expeditions, a spare element therefore belongs in the luggage.
Why ceramic lasts so long
Katadyn ceramic is a depth filter: the filtering effect sits not on a thin membrane but throughout the cross-section of the material. When the surface loads up with suspended solids, you take it off with the cleaning sponge and expose fresh filter material beneath. That is exactly what hollow fibre cartridges cannot do – eventually they block and have to be discarded. Up to 20'000 litres of capacity is therefore not a theoretical figure but the result of many cleaning cycles.
