Buy the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars – the bright wide-angle all-rounder

The KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars is the full-size format of Kowa’s new BD III XD series. Compared with the previous BD II XD the proven optical system is unchanged; what was reworked is handling and ergonomics: soft silicone eyecups, a new grip pattern, a larger precision focus wheel and a lighter magnesium chassis. The 42 mm format combines light-gathering with a field of view officially certified as wide angle to ISO 14132-2.

Relative brightness 28.1 · the brightest model in the range

A 5.3 mm exit pupil – why that is worth half an hour in the forest

The exit pupil determines how much light actually reaches the eye. In daylight the human pupil is around 3 mm wide; at dusk it opens to between 5 and 7 mm. That is exactly when the 8x42 with its 5.3 mm provides reserves a 32 mm binocular no longer has – its relative brightness of 28.1 is the highest figure in the entire BD III XD range. Add a 143.4 m field of view, exceptionally wide for a full-size binocular and likewise certified to ISO 14132-2.

XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass – contrast instead of colour fringing

The larger the objective, the more chromatic aberration matters: high-contrast edges pick up coloured fringes that smear detail. Kowa therefore works with XD (extra-low dispersion) lenses made from fluorite-rich ED glass, specifically minimising that dispersion. It shows on exactly the subjects where it counts: a dark raptor against bright sky, a deer backlit at the forest edge, lettering on a sign at long range.

Magnesium alloy – full-size performance without full-size weight

A 42 mm binocular does not have to be heavy. Kowa uses a magnesium alloy chassis that delivers the stiffness large objectives need without the mass of a metal body. The redesigned rubber armour holds in wet or gloved hands, and the large focus wheel runs smoothly and precisely. Together with the soft silicone eyecups, that is what makes the difference on observations lasting hours.

KR protective coating, waterproof and nitrogen-filled

The KR coating on objective and eyepiece lenses actively repels water, dust and dirt – raindrops bead off instead of smearing the view, and cleaning after a session is quicker. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so internal fogging is designed out. For the third generation Kowa additionally revised the objective covers, rainguard and carrying case.

42 mm, 32 mm or 50 mm – which BD III XD fits your use?

Within the BD III XD series it is mainly objective diameter that decides. The 42 mm models are the classic compromise: enough light for woodland and dusk while still comfortable handheld. The 8x42 offers the largest exit pupil in the range at 5.3 mm, the 10x42 more detail at distance. If you want to travel lighter, the 32 mm models start at 505 g; if you mostly observe at dusk, the new 50 mm versions hold more reserve. Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions – KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars

Answers to the common questions about the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars – from field of view and XD lenses to eyeglass compatibility, care and shipping within Switzerland.

What field of view does the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars have?
The KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars shows 143.4 m at 1'000 m, corresponding to a 8.2° angle of view. It is officially certified as a wide-angle binocular to ISO 14132-2 – the standard that defines when a binocular may carry the wide-angle designation.
What are XD lenses and what do they do?
XD stands for extra-low dispersion. Kowa makes these lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass, which refracts different wavelengths more evenly. As a result, high-contrast edges show almost no colour fringing – the image stays contrasty and the colours natural. The difference shows most clearly against the light, for instance when a dark bird sits against a bright sky.
What separates the BD III XD from the previous BD II XD series?
The optical system is unchanged – Kowa reworked the handling instead. New are soft silicone eyecups, an improved grip pattern, a redesigned focus wheel and a lighter chassis. The objective covers, rainguard and carrying case were revised as well. Add the two new 50 mm models and Kowa’s current design language.
What is the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars best suited for?
The KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars is particularly suited to: Birdwatching, Hunting & stand, Woodland & forestry, Spectacle wearers, Low-light observation, Hiking & nature. That is what makes it the right tool – the bright wide-angle all-rounder.
Which model in the BD III XD series suits me?
The series comprises seven models differing in field of view, weight and light-gathering. The 6.5x32 has the widest field at 175.0 m, the 8x32 is the balanced standard, the 10x32 the lightest at 505 g. The 42 mm models gather more light: the 8x42 with a 5.3 mm exit pupil, the 10x42 with more detail at distance. The new 50 mm versions are the dusk specialists – the 10x50 with a larger exit pupil, the 12x50 with the highest twilight factor in the range.
Is the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars suitable for spectacle wearers?
Eye relief is 17.2 mm. That is the longest figure in the entire BD III XD range and therefore especially spectacle-friendly. The soft silicone eyecups twist down for glasses wearers, bringing the eye closer to the eyepiece so the field of view is not clipped at the edges.
How close can the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars focus?
Close focus is 1.8 m. That still allows close-range observation, for instance insects at the path edge or detail on a plant.
Is the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars waterproof, and what is the chassis made of?
Yes. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so it will not fog internally when you come from cold into warmth. The chassis is a magnesium alloy – lighter than aluminium and stiffer than plastic – with rubber armour over it. In addition, the KR coating on objective and eyepiece lenses repels water, dust and dirt.
