Buy the KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars – the bright wide-angle all-rounder
The KOWA BD III XD 8x42 Binoculars is the full-size format of Kowa’s new BD III XD series. Compared with the previous BD II XD the proven optical system is unchanged; what was reworked is handling and ergonomics: soft silicone eyecups, a new grip pattern, a larger precision focus wheel and a lighter magnesium chassis. The 42 mm format combines light-gathering with a field of view officially certified as wide angle to ISO 14132-2.
Relative brightness 28.1 · the brightest model in the range
A 5.3 mm exit pupil – why that is worth half an hour in the forest
The exit pupil determines how much light actually reaches the eye. In daylight the human pupil is around 3 mm wide; at dusk it opens to between 5 and 7 mm. That is exactly when the 8x42 with its 5.3 mm provides reserves a 32 mm binocular no longer has – its relative brightness of 28.1 is the highest figure in the entire BD III XD range. Add a 143.4 m field of view, exceptionally wide for a full-size binocular and likewise certified to ISO 14132-2.
XD lenses from fluorite-rich ED glass – contrast instead of colour fringing
The larger the objective, the more chromatic aberration matters: high-contrast edges pick up coloured fringes that smear detail. Kowa therefore works with XD (extra-low dispersion) lenses made from fluorite-rich ED glass, specifically minimising that dispersion. It shows on exactly the subjects where it counts: a dark raptor against bright sky, a deer backlit at the forest edge, lettering on a sign at long range.
Magnesium alloy – full-size performance without full-size weight
A 42 mm binocular does not have to be heavy. Kowa uses a magnesium alloy chassis that delivers the stiffness large objectives need without the mass of a metal body. The redesigned rubber armour holds in wet or gloved hands, and the large focus wheel runs smoothly and precisely. Together with the soft silicone eyecups, that is what makes the difference on observations lasting hours.
KR protective coating, waterproof and nitrogen-filled
The KR coating on objective and eyepiece lenses actively repels water, dust and dirt – raindrops bead off instead of smearing the view, and cleaning after a session is quicker. The body is waterproof and nitrogen-filled, so internal fogging is designed out. For the third generation Kowa additionally revised the objective covers, rainguard and carrying case.

If you want to travel lighter, the 32 mm models start at 505 g; if you mostly observe at dusk, the new 50 mm versions hold more reserve.
