A sleeping bag decides whether you wake up rested after a night in a tent, a hut or a bivouac. In autumn the nights get longer and cooler – a three-season or winter sleeping bag with the right comfort temperature gets you through the season.
At Swiss-Sale.ch you'll find over 80 sleeping bags and accessories from Grüezi Bag, Snugpak, Grand Canyon, BCB International and Nordisk: mummy and blanket sleeping bags, down, wool and synthetic sleeping bags, adjustable kids' sleeping bags, liners and bivy bags. This buying guide shows you which sleeping bag suits your trip and how to read the temperature ratings.
For warm summer nights and camping by the lake, a light sleeping bag with a comfort temperature of around +5 to +8 °C is enough. The Grüezi Bag DownWool Summer Comfort (comfort +8 °C, limit +4 °C, 950 g) is a blanket sleeping bag you can open fully and use as a quilt. For travel to warm, humid regions, the Snugpak Jungle Bag (comfort +7 °C, 900 g) has a built-in mosquito net.
In spring and autumn, night-time temperatures quickly drop towards freezing. A three-season sleeping bag with a comfort temperature of around 0 to +3 °C is the all-rounder here. The Grand Canyon Fairbanks 190 (comfort +2 °C, limit –4 °C, 1'850 g) is a mummy sleeping bag for heights up to 190 cm. Lighter options are the Grüezi Bag DownWool Subzero 185 (comfort +2 °C, limit –4 °C, around 1'050 g) with down-wool fill and the Grüezi Bag Synpod Fusion Zero 185 (comfort +3 °C, limit –3 °C, around 1'150 g) with synthetic fill.
For winter camping, overnight ski tours and bivouacs you need a winter sleeping bag with a comfort temperature below freezing, a mummy cut, a hood and a draught collar. The Grüezi Bag DownWool Ice 200 (comfort –1 °C, limit –8 °C) weighs around 1'600 g and fits heights from 185 to 200 cm. The Snugpak Softie Elite 5 (comfort –15 °C, 2'400 g) and the Softie Antarctica (comfort –20 °C, 2'950 g) have synthetic fill and are designed for deep sub-zero temperatures.
In mountain huts and youth hostels, a liner – also called a hut sleeping bag – keeps things hygienic. The Snugpak silk and cotton liner weighs 140 g, is 210 cm long and can be used on its own in warm regions. Inside your sleeping bag, a liner also protects the lining from sweat and dirt. You'll find all models under sleeping bag liners.
Kids' sleeping bags are shorter and narrower, so your child has less air to warm up. Adjustable models can be lengthened and grow with your child over several years – ideal for family holidays, scout and school camps. The Grüezi Bag Kids Grow Colorful fits heights from 100 to 155 cm, weighs 1'000 g, has synthetic fill and is washable at 30 °C; the Grüezi Bag DownWool KidsTeen with down-wool fill extends to 170 cm and weighs 780 g. For an overview, see kids' sleeping bags and the selection for children from 100 to 155 cm. As a Christmas present for young adventurers, a sleeping bag of their own is a gift that lasts.
Many manufacturers state three temperature values. The comfort temperature is the value at which you sleep relaxed without feeling cold – this is the one to go by. The limit temperature is the lowest temperature at which you can get through a night curled up without getting chilled. The extreme temperature is purely a safety value: below it there is a risk of hypothermia, and it is not meant for sleeping.
| Model | Comfort | Limit | Extreme | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snugpak Jungle Bag | +7 °C | not stated | +2 °C | 900 g |
| Grüezi Bag Murmeltier Comfort XXL | +8 °C | +4 °C | –10 °C | approx. 1'600 g |
| Grand Canyon Fairbanks 190 | +2 °C | –4 °C | –21 °C | 1'850 g |
| Grüezi Bag DownWool Subzero 185 | +2 °C | –4 °C | –20 °C | approx. 1'050 g |
| Grüezi Bag DownWool Ice 200 | –1 °C | –8 °C | –26 °C | approx. 1'600 g |
| Snugpak Softie Elite 5 | –15 °C | not stated | –20 °C | 2'400 g |
| Snugpak Softie Antarctica | –20 °C | not stated | –30 °C | 2'950 g |
Grüezi Bag states comfort, limit and extreme for its adult sleeping bags, explicitly according to EN 13537 for the Murmeltier Comfort XXL. Snugpak states comfort and extreme values. For kids' sleeping bags, ISO 23537-1 does not allow temperature ratings because the standard test manikin corresponds to an adult; Grüezi Bag therefore gives none for its kids' models – go by the fill and the season instead. Without a sleeping mat you won't reach the stated values, because the fill under your body is compressed.
Down insulates at a low weight and packs small, but loses warmth when it gets damp. That's why Grüezi Bag combines 70 % duck down with 30 % wool in its DownWool fill: the wool absorbs moisture before it reaches the down. The DownWool Subzero 185, for example, has 561 g of fill with 700+ cuin fill power and compresses to Ø 20 × 23 cm.
Synthetic fill still insulates well when damp, dries faster and is easy to care for – practical in damp autumn weather, at camp and for children. For the same warmth, however, it is usually heavier and bulkier than down. Snugpak uses its own Softie fill, Grüezi Bag uses Synthdown insulation in the Synpod series. See all synthetic sleeping bags.
Wool regulates the sleeping climate, absorbs moisture and resists odours. In the Grüezi Bag Biopod Wolle Murmeltier Comfort XXL, the first fill layer consists of 85 % new wool and 15 % corn-starch fibre. You'll find all models with wool under wool sleeping bags.
Wash your sleeping bag rarely, closed and on a gentle cycle at max. 30 °C – down with down detergent, synthetic with a mild detergent – and let it dry completely. At home, store it loosely in a large bag rather than in the compression sack so the fill keeps its loft.
A mummy sleeping bag fits close to the body, has a hood and usually a draught collar. It has little air to warm up, which makes it the shape for cold nights, trekking and bivouacs. A blanket sleeping bag is rectangular, gives you more room to move and can be opened fully and used as a quilt – comfortable for camping, huts and vanlife. Grüezi Bag also makes mummy sleeping bags with a comfort cut in which you can lie on your side with your legs bent.
Couples and families choose models that can be zipped together: two sleeping bags with left and right zips, such as the Grüezi Bag Murmeltier Comfort XXL or the Snugpak Jungle Bag, can be joined into a double sleeping bag.
The length should match your height and not be much longer. With Grüezi Bag and Grand Canyon, the number in the model name indicates the matching body height – the Fairbanks 190 is for up to 190 cm, the DownWool Ice 200 fits 185 to 200 cm. Many Snugpak models such as the Tactical 4 or the Softie Antarctica are 220 cm long and designed for heights up to 190 cm. A sleeping bag that is too long leaves empty space at the foot end that you have to heat.
Instead of buying a separate sleeping bag for every season, you can combine layers. The Snugpak Special Forces System consists of two sleeping bags and a zip connector: the Special Forces 1 (comfort +5 °C) is the light bag for nights above freezing, the Special Forces 2 (comfort –7 °C) the warmer one. Put the first inside the second and connect them, and you reach comfort –15 °C and extreme –20 °C. The complete system weighs 3'500 g, and each bag comes with its own compression sack.
A liner adds a little warmth and keeps your sleeping bag clean. A bivy bag protects your sleeping bag from wind, dew and rain: the Nordisk Jorund Tech Bivy has a hydrostatic head of 10'000 mm, weighs 1'210 g and can also be used as a poncho, tarp or blanket. For emergencies in your backpack, the BCB Bad Weather Bag weighs just 100 g and reflects body heat.
Insulation from below is just as important: under your body weight the fill is compressed and barely insulates, so a suitable sleeping mat is a must. If you sleep in a hammock, add an insulation system such as the Snugpak Cocoon, which fits most hammocks and keeps out the wind.

Go by the comfort temperature and the coldest night of your trip. For summer nights, models with a comfort rating of around +5 to +8 °C are enough; for spring and autumn, a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of around 0 to +3 °C is a good all-rounder. For winter camping and bivouacs you need comfort ratings below freezing – down to –15 °C or lower, depending on the trip.
At the comfort temperature you sleep relaxed without feeling cold. The limit temperature is the point at which you can just about avoid getting chilled when curled up. The extreme temperature is a safety value below which there is a risk of hypothermia – it is not meant for sleeping. Grüezi Bag states all three values, Snugpak states comfort and extreme.
Down insulates at a low weight and packs small, but loses warmth when it gets wet. Synthetic fill stays warm when damp, dries faster and is easy to care for, but is heavier for the same warmth. Grüezi Bag's DownWool fill combines 70 % down with 30 % wool, which absorbs moisture before it reaches the down.
A winter sleeping bag has a comfort temperature below freezing, a mummy shape, a hood and a draught collar. Examples are the Grüezi Bag DownWool Ice 200 with comfort –1 °C and limit –8 °C, the Snugpak Softie Elite 5 with comfort –15 °C and the Snugpak Softie Antarctica with comfort –20 °C. A well-insulating sleeping mat is part of the system.
A mummy sleeping bag fits closely, has a hood and keeps you warmer on cold nights – ideal for trekking and bivouacs. A blanket sleeping bag is rectangular, gives you more room to move and can be opened fully and used as a quilt. Some blanket sleeping bags can be zipped to a second model to form a double.
A kids' sleeping bag should match the child's height so there is little air to warm up. Adjustable models can be lengthened: the Grüezi Bag Kids Grow Colorful fits 100 to 155 cm, the Grüezi Bag DownWool KidsTeen 100 to 170 cm. The Snugpak Sleeper Kids is designed for children up to around 140 cm. Grüezi Bag kids' sleeping bags carry no temperature rating, because ISO 23537-1 does not allow it for children.
Choose the length according to your height. With Grüezi Bag and Grand Canyon, the number in the name shows the matching height, for example 185 or 190 cm. Many Snugpak models are 220 cm long and designed for heights up to 190 cm. If the sleeping bag is much too long, you have to heat the empty space at the foot end.
A liner protects your sleeping bag from sweat and dirt and adds a little warmth. It is also practical for overnight stays in huts, youth hostels or hotels. The Snugpak silk and cotton liner weighs 140 g and can be used on its own in warm regions.
The system consists of two mummy sleeping bags and a zip connector. You use the Special Forces 1 with comfort +5 °C on its own on nights above freezing, and the Special Forces 2 with comfort –7 °C on its own on cool nights. Put the first inside the second and connect them, and you get a sleeping bag with comfort –15 °C and extreme –20 °C.
