Sleeping bags for outdoor and camping

A good sleeping bag is the heart of any camping or trekking kit. It decides whether you wake up rested after a long hike or shiver through the night. At Swiss-Sale.ch you will find a carefully curated range of sleeping bags – from light models for summer and travel to expedition bags for extreme sub-zero temperatures.

Our range covers models from the established brands Snugpak, Grüezi Bag, Nordisk, Grand Canyon and BCB International. All temperature ratings are based on the European EN 13537 standard, which clearly defines comfort, limit and extreme temperature – so you can choose your sleeping bag with confidence. The range is rounded out with inner sleeping bags as inlets for hygiene and additional warmth.

Sleeping bag types – overview

At Swiss-Sale.ch the sleeping bags are filterable by several attributes. Each focus area has its own filter page – so you can find the right model directly without scrolling through the entire range.

By shape – mummy or rectangular

The mummy shape is body-hugging and usually has a hood with neck baffle – it stores body heat efficiently and is the first choice for low temperatures, trekking and mountain sport. The rectangular sleeping bag is wider, offers more freedom of movement and can be opened along its full length – ideal for camping, festivals and warm nights. Both shapes are available as separate filter pages: mummy sleeping bags and rectangular sleeping bags.

By type – synthetic, wool, inner or kids

The category is filterable by sleeping bag type:

By temperature & season

Use the temperature filter to pick the right comfort range:

  • Summer (+5 °C to +15 °C) – light and compact for warm nights, festivals and travel
  • Three seasons (–5 °C to +10 °C) – the all-rounder for most tours in Switzerland and Europe
  • Winter (below –10 °C) – high fill volume, mummy cut, hood and neck baffle for maximum warmth
  • Expedition (below –25 °C) – for high altitude and arctic conditions

By filling – down or synthetic

Down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio and is durable, but loses much of its insulation when wet. Synthetic is more affordable, easier to care for and warms even when damp. Both fillings are represented in the range and can be selected via filter.

By body size & special features

For tall or broad people we carry XL and XXL models. The Special filter highlights bags with integrated mosquito net, grow-along models and bags made of 100 % natural materials.

Multiple sleeping bags in one – the 3-in-1 system

For users who don’t want a separate sleeping bag for every season, there is the Snugpak Special Forces System: two individually usable sleeping bags (Special Forces 1 and Special Forces 2) that combine via a connecting piece into a third, significantly warmer system. That gives you three sleeping bags for three use cases in one set: light for summer and three-season use, mid-weight for cooler nights, combined for winter and alpine bivouacs. Both inner bags use compatible YKK zips and can be used independently as well – a proven setup from military use that also gives ambitious outdoor users a versatile year-round sleeping bag solution.

Brands in the range

We carry selected manufacturers established in Swiss outdoor and professional use:

  • Snugpak – British manufacturer with over 45 years of experience in military and civilian sleeping bag construction
  • Grüezi Bag – German brand specialised in wool fillings and grow-along kids sleeping bags
  • Nordisk – Danish premium maker of high-end down sleeping bags for trekking and expeditions
  • Grand Canyon – solid models with excellent value for camping and leisure
  • BCB International – British survival and military supplier with compact, robust models

Buying a sleeping bag – what you should know

Our recommendation: always pick your sleeping bag for the coldest night you’ll experience – not for the average. It’s far better to be able to open a sleeping bag than to shiver and risk hypothermia.

The right sleeping bag depends on several factors: planned use, season, personal heat sensation and weight – because if you hike long trekking routes you want to save every gram in the pack. Always check three values: comfort temperature (the one that matters for you), limit temperature (the lowest without cooling out) and extreme temperature (survival limit, not for comfortable sleep).

FAQ – sleeping bags

Which sleeping bag for which temperature?

Rule of thumb for the comfort range per EN 13537: for warm summer nights a model rated +5 °C to +15 °C is enough. For three-season tours (spring to autumn in Switzerland) a sleeping bag with a –5 °C comfort rating is the best choice. For winter camping and mountaineering the comfort range should be at –10 °C or lower, for expeditions below –25 °C. Important: always go by the comfort value, not the limit or extreme value.

Down or synthetic – which is better?

Down has the best warmth-to-weight ratio, packs smaller and lasts longer – but loses much of its insulation when wet. Synthetic stays warm when damp, is easier to care for and cheaper, but is heavier and bulkier. Rule of thumb: for dry conditions, trekking and expeditions, down pays off. For wet climates, camping and quick drying, synthetic is the better choice.

Mummy or rectangular – which is better?

The mummy bag is body-hugging and has a hood – it traps body heat efficiently and is the first choice for low temperatures, trekking and mountain sport. The rectangular bag is wider, offers more freedom of movement and opens fully – ideal for camping, festivals, warm nights and families. For comfort and freedom of movement, choose rectangular; for warmth and weight optimisation, choose mummy.

What do comfort, limit and extreme temperature mean?

These three values come from the EN 13537 standard and are the standard rating on every sleeping bag: Comfort = the temperature at which an average woman can still sleep comfortably in the bag. Limit = the temperature at which an average man just doesn’t cool out. Extreme = survival limit (risk of hypothermia, not for sleeping). Always plan around the comfort value.

Which sleeping bag is right for trekking?

For trekking, weight and packed size matter. A light down or synthetic mummy bag with 600–1,200 g pack weight and a small compression sack is ideal. Three-season models with –5 °C comfort temperature cover most trekking routes in Switzerland and Europe. For high altitudes and winter tours, choose more fill accordingly.

How do I care for my sleeping bag?

Don’t store sleeping bags compressed any longer than necessary – at home keep them in a large storage sack or laid out flat so the filling keeps its loft. Washing depends on the filling: down with a special detergent on a gentle cycle at 30 °C, then tumble-dry gently with tennis balls. Synthetic can be washed at 30 °C and air-dried. Always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Do I need an inner sleeping bag (inlet)?

An inner sleeping bag pays off for several reasons: it keeps the main bag clean inside (the inlet is much easier to wash), it raises the comfort temperature by 3–8 °C depending on material, and on warm trips it can serve as a stand-alone bag in hostels or in warm conditions. Browse the inner sleeping bags category.

What is fill power (Cuin) on down sleeping bags?

Fill power (measured in Cuin) indicates how much volume one ounce (28 g) of down fills. The higher the value, the better the down insulates relative to weight. Values from 600 Cuin are good, from 700 Cuin very good, from 800 Cuin premium. High fill power means: less weight and smaller pack size for the same warmth.

Sleeping bag size – how do I measure correctly?

The interior length of the bag should be about 20 cm longer than your body height. For a 180 cm tall adult, that’s about 200 cm. For tall people from 190 cm or broad shoulders we carry XL and XXL variants. Bags that are too short lose warmth at the foot end; bags that are too long create unnecessary dead space that has to be heated by body warmth.

Do I need a sleeping pad with the sleeping bag?

Yes, a sleeping pad is just as important as the sleeping bag. Under body weight the bag’s filling is compressed and barely insulates – cold comes from the ground. A pad with adequate R-value (insulation rating) prevents this loss. Rule of thumb: R-value 1–3 for summer, 3–5 for three seasons, 5+ for winter.

What is a 3-in-1 sleeping bag system?

A 3-in-1 sleeping bag consists of two individually usable bags and a connecting piece. Each inner bag covers its own temperature range; combined, they form a third, significantly warmer bag – hence 3 in 1. With the Snugpak Special Forces System you get a light bag for warm nights, a mid-weight bag for cooler conditions and the combined system for winter and low temperatures. Practical for users who want a versatile, year-round sleeping setup without buying three separate bags.
