The Grand Canyon Apex 1 is our beginner's tip: quick to pitch, reliably dry and ideally priced for your first nights under canvas. If you prefer a low profile, choose the Richmond 1 in olive. For three persons, the Snugpak Journey Trio is the affordable all-rounder. Most important tip for the start: practise the first pitch at home – then it works on tour even in wind and oncoming rain.
A classic one-person tent like the Ionosphere offers space for you and your gear and stands up to several days of bad weather. A bivy tent like the Snugpak Stratosphere is the middle ground between tent and bivy bag: minimal weight and pack size, but less room – ideal for solo hikers travelling fast and light. Pure bivy bags are even more minimalist and serve many as an emergency reserve.
Ultralight tents like the Nordisk Oppland 3 LW save weight through thinner, high-quality fabrics and consistent lightweight construction – the result is tents that often weigh less than a kilo per person. The trade-off: the materials want more careful handling than heavy touring tents, and the price is higher. On long treks, however, every gram saved pays off twice.
Above the tree line you need wind stability and reliable guying: the Alpino Everest and the Snugpak Scorpion series are the recommendations here. Beyond the material, practice matters: choose a wind-sheltered site, use all guy lines and set up camp before dusk. Also observe the local camping rules – overnight stays are not allowed in protected areas and wildlife rest zones.

Flat, slightly elevated and wind-sheltered – those are the three basic rules. Avoid hollows (water and cold air collect there), do not pitch directly under dead branches and turn the entrance away from the weather side. On soft forest ground, pegs hold less well: weigh down flat-driven pegs with stones or guy out to roots.
A 3-season tent is optimised for spring to autumn: plenty of mesh for ventilation, lighter material. A 4-season tent relies on a more stable pole construction, less mesh and storm-proof guying – it also withstands snow load and winter storms, but is heavier. For most tours in Switzerland a good 3-season model is enough; if you are out in winter or high alpine terrain, choose the more rugged class like Scorpion or Everest.
Let it dry completely after every tour – that is the most important rule. Remove dirt with lukewarm water and a sponge, never machine-wash. If water repellency fades (water no longer beads off), treat the flysheet with proofing spray and refresh stressed seams with seam sealer. Cared for like this, a quality tent lasts many years.
Condensation forms when moist breath meets the cool flysheet – it can never be prevented entirely, but clearly reduced: keep the vents open, do not pitch directly by the water or in hollows, store wet gear in the porch instead of the inner tent and air the tent briefly in the morning. If your sleeping bag touches the flysheet, a tent with more interior space or a tarp as an additional roof helps.
The tent is the all-rounder: it works everywhere, protects your gear and offers the most room. The hammock wins on weight and on uneven forest ground, but needs two anchor points. Tree tents combine both – sleeping above the ground with tent comfort. Rule of thumb: above the tree line and on campsites the tent, in the woods as you prefer.
